Wow... E55,

I forgot my Azurite R129, and my W212 is Mystic Blue. And, of course, when I find its replacement, my next (and last) W211, that too will be dark blue...

Dennis,

What happened to your old blue E55K?

Being that the estates aren’t that common - especially in the particular shades of blue you like, why not look into buying it back again? :)

I doubt there’s that many blue ‘55k wagons out there.

I know of a Tealite blue E55K estate but not sure the owner would want to sell (I’m pretty sure they’re a member on here)

My old car is up around 170K miles now, and the interior is anthracite. Additionally, the rear arches had to be resprayed because of rust when I got it, and we all know rust always comes back eventually.

I'm looking for low mileage - under 100K - and preferably a light-coloured interior, otherwise I'll simply hang on to the E63, which is just coming up to 90K miles. There's nothing much wrong with it, but I much prefer the interior of the W211 to the W212. The old five-speed gearbox doesn't need very careful throttle control to avoid jerking when moving off slowly, either, which the MCT 'box does, particularly when cold, and this trait is becoming irritating. I know they all do it, to a lesser or greater degree, because of the wet multiplate clutch, but it's still irritating...

There is a 7 seater E55K for 6995 out there at the mo as well.

Most of that I can agree with - the seats in the 211 are definitely more comfortable on long journeys and the interior in general has a slightly more old-school quality feel about it, by comparison the 212 may be more up to date but feels a little more VW to me, slightly more hard plastic surfaces, just feels a little light of quality in some places? Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate some of the improvements in the 212 (and more modern tech in places) but miss some of the aspects of the 211 also.

Paint is a bit poor on 212s - and other modern MBs of this era (orange peel) which isn’t present on any of the 211s I’ve had. Par for the course on the majority of modern cars though.

You’re right about the gearbox too. Mine currently has 13k from new (and has had the ATF and filter replaced on schedule by MB), it’s quicker and snappier but not as smooth as a 722.6 with a torque converter, although I suspect the low-down torque of the ‘55 also helps - it can hold onto higher gears and still pull smoothly whilst making rapid progress.

The ride is better too - the ‘55 wafts around on air, whereas the ‘63 has firmer suspension and lower profile tyres.

I can definitely see why you’re after another ‘55k, I love them too (and did decide to keep mine for a while longer) but the reality is regardless of mileage they’re all fairly old cars now - the difference between a 100k miller and 170k example would perhaps only be down to how it’s been used and maintained really - It’s no guarantee of quality or reliability.

Finding a blue one with no rust, under 100k miles and a light interior - no chance. Maybe blue and under 100k if you’re very, very lucky but I’ve only seen one 55k with an interior that’s not anthracite with/without the blue or burgundy inserts, and that was on a black car some years back.

Maybe if the right car comes up, a retrim from somewhere like D-class would be the way forward? :thumb:

Mine was 127k when I sold it earlier this year & no rust at all, the C32 did but I just fitted new wings etc.
The 722.6 box is a funny one ( if I might stray a little) as you say in the E55k its brilliant & very well matched to that wide torque band that makes the car so excellent to drive. The same box in the C32 though has a really annoying thing where the lock torque solenoid comes in just around 2nd gear with a thud or a jolt...that to became very irritating but as i say not in the E55k, if the box is similar to this in the 212 I would have to let it go...I don't take to the styling of the 212 at all, 211 hard act to follow!

I think Bofo is the only one here with any money ...:(;)

Well, there's at least one that is blue and under 100k, because it set this thread off. So far as rust is concerned, I've only had two with perfect rear arches - one on 85k, the other on 130k. You never know...

The gearbox doesn’t jolt (well not on mine anyway) it’s just that there’s no torque converter so it revs and pulls away with the clutch setup then snaps through the gears as you need them - all seven of them.

There’s a few more settings (C, S, S+ and RS) but I find comfort too lethargic and S/S+ a bit too snappy...also unless I’ve missed a trick it always defaults back to ‘C’ after you finish that journey - I can’t work out how to set it to stay in ‘S’ permanently?

I really should spend a bit of time reading through the manuals perhaps but there’s a few other things I’ve not mastered yet - eg rear climate on the 211 (quad zone) can be adjusted from the front. The 212 has only three zones (one adjustment for the rear) but I’ve not found a way of setting it from the main controls in the front yet?

...etc :D

I thought that you didn’t like that shade of blue...! :)

That was up for 11k last year on Classic and Classic website, 154k in silver
Yup, seems straight and decent one owner most of its life it seems other than ex-demo.

It's not to my taste, but it's undeniably blue. If it were Tanzanite, Mystic or Azurite, I'd buy it.

I didn't find it, but there are a couple of E500 estates on there that look good. One is a high(ish) miler in what looks like Tanzanite, with a grey interior, and it's a one-owner car, so I'd bet it has been very well looked after.

Agreed it’s blue...obviously - but you said you want Tanzanite, Mystic or Azurite blue, under 100k and a light coloured interior (and no rust by the sound of it) - and in estate form of course.. :)

Not just a tall order but not going to happen for an E55K.

Like I said earlier, you’d be doing well to find one in a a colour you like with under 100k miles let alone an interior colour that wasn’t available from the standard range :thumb:

^ I would look for a good example with the options you need, buy it and have it wrapped to get the shade and colour you really want.
Finding an E55 estate with a light interior is hard enough.
