Wrangler!

Mileage is quite high given that these are not 'proper' road vehicles.

Can't imagine why anyone would want to cruise on motorways in a Wrangler. I've done it with some earlier incarnations of the Jeep, and it's a man's world! :D

Said that, lovely 4x4, the only thing that ever came close to a Landy (sorry G-Wagon).

Yep. For me a jeep has to be either a Wrangler, G Wagon, or Landy. Nothing else compares for me. These just look the dogs ********!

Well, I had some good times in the seventies with an International Scout II... but it's not as rugged as the CJ-5 ;)

a bit Brokeback mountain for my taste and you need to check out the suspension as some are cart sprung, some are half and half and only the most recent have coils all round.

Strangely... I seem to remember reading that it was the Wrangler was the 'greenest' car on the planet... once the overall production process is taken into account, mainly due to use of old/basic/simple technologies which are less polluting than newer ones, or something to that effect.

Terrible, terrible, terrible. Had the 4.0 Limited edition, cared for it from 2 years old. Got so rusty a step fell off while driving! Gearbox knackered, mysterious faults no dealership could identify, horrible to drive - unsteady in winds, steering like on a tank, no acceleration (even worse than a Landy, and this is the 4l version), 10mpg on mine.

Look good, but to drive they're useless. Having taken it off-road once (relatively gently) the starter motor got full of crud and it didn't drive properly afterwards.

I can't think of a single redeeming feature of the wrangler. They're like driving 1950s tractors and also have the image of the being the quintessential hair dressers car. Truly aweful.

when I lived in the Middle East one of my mates bought one for off roading, and it wasn't even very good at that. Several times I had to use my Pajero to tow it out of trouble.

Find an old series Landrover or a convertible G wagon.

this version / colour combo was my dream car back in the 90's - my mate got it as his first car, and i was quite close to getting one, until i realized i could only afford one of the french offerings, but what a car.. when they introduced the round headlamps, it looked a bit too soft for my liking, but these rectangular hardlamp versions were soo damn good..

Jeep : Jeep Wrangler "YJ" Sahara for sale,

Errr.... that's the redeeming feature ;)

Hello

My Brother had one as a 'fun' car and off road fun days.

It was great, His was a 4.0 Limited, kept it for around 5 years. I think from memory you might as well get the 4.0 as not much difference in fuel. It wasn't 10mpg bad ?? ok not great but it was 5 speed manual, maybe the 4 speed auto would be a lot worse?

0-60 was around 8 seconds and in the wet in 2wd mode it was scarry...(short wheel base didn't help)

He modied it with a slight lift kit, diff guard, sump guard and decent (proper off road tyres)

We went on a LOT of off road days and the stuff this would go up and down and through was amazing, really was good. The lift and tyres however helped a lot.

This was his, not a great pic but you get the idea :)

Mine was the 'pre-facelift' early 1994 version, all black on the outside. Cream interior. It did do 10mpg and it was the 4 speed auto. Misfired at over 2000rpm and cut out at 2500rpm. Top speed about 50mph due to that, and it just could't do hills! Got rid of it at 60000 miles! Paid £16000 for it when it was 2 years old, sold it for under £2000 to a Jeep specialist who replaced the interior with a grey one and re-engined it. Saw they sold it on eBay for just £1700 after all that! (Auction) Complete with M3 SUB number plate I had (came with car, no idea why!). Now on a BMW M3 convertible!

I read this too - in addition to the simple build, their strength meant many stayed around longer too. I sat in a brand new one recently - quite taken with it - but wouldn't want to live with it.

Cheap not Jeep

Cheap as in £500 three years ago, 2.2 Mazda diesel, great in snow!
