Ron:Since aka$h has a set, them maybe the did sell the tips only.I looked for a set for a while without any luck and than decided to go Remus
I understand, I think you may be correct.
Sort of like the "you need 3 items to 'qualify' for the AMG trunk badge" in America. Maybe at the beginning, but eventually it got down to "you need $50 to 'qualify' for the AMG trunk badge, and 'yes, we'll take a check.'"
This would be an excellent time to bring up the following suggestion (and increase my thread count so I may actually PM aka$k before I die of natural causes).
Since I got involved with Mercedes, particularly the 036 500E, about 3 years ago, I have been collecting, saving, pics of unusual items from the various eBay's, Yahoo-Japan and Allegro pl. I am surprised as to the unusual items that constantly turn up, sometimes it is the only know pic, or reference for that matter, I have seen of an item. Things turn up in the most unusual of places, witness the Wide Bodied 126 Penta's that recently were for sale in the middle of nowhere, I think the place was called Scotland. Who would have thought...
Got the idea from my involvement with 356s and 120s. Ever hear of a chronometric tach or the thin alloy "baby moon" hub caps for a 356? Or the 3 piece sump and 2.25 H10 sandcast carbs for an XK 120? All these came out of some obscure factory reference documents or the small ads in the back of Autosport - Motor Sport, etc., from the 1950s. Today the Internet has, to some extent, replaced the magazines when it comes to selling items. Anyway, unless you really "knew someone," VERY important at that, you couldn't get those items when new. As time went on the existence and knowledge of these items became more widespread -- to the point where, today, these items are worth their weight in Devonshire cream here in the States. Gold elsewhere I assume.
I am looking for the elusive AMG 500E (036) muffler. From what I gather it was a Japan Only item, perhaps made by Sebring in Au. although there is a pic of a NOS item on AMG Dave's site that looks like it was a Gillet item where the AMG tips were welded on (by either Gillet or AMG itself). There is also a pic on a Japanese site of a NOS 034 (400E) muffler that looks like a Gillet item, I have come to the firm conclusion of "I don't know."
This is also why I admire Talbirs collection, he seems to go a long way to make things period correct. One may not like that boomerang antenna on one of his cars or the Wide Bodied Koenig Ferrari, but they were representative of the late 80s. Much like those strange coloured Phony and Flashy Delahayes and Delages were of the 30s through the early 50s, at one point you couldn't give them away. Duesenbergs and Hemi powered Plymouth Superbirds and Dodge Daytonas are more recent examples.
Anyway, just trying to increase my posting count while sharing some knowledge I have gained over the 38 years I have been playing with old cars, not to mention bumping this to the top.
Kind Regards,
Ron
