I’ve recently bought an early X164 GL which I’ve been advised needs the chain in the transfer box replacing.

Has anyone done one of these on an ML/GL?, I was thinking of attempting a DIY as it doesn’t look too difficult from the videos I’ve seen online but then they always make it look easy!, I imagine a ramp would be a massive help time wise rather than crawling around under the car.

It’s nice to be back in a Merc though, although it’s huge, it even dwarfs my 80 Series Landcruiser when parked next to it!.

I’ve done loads. In theory it’s possible to do it in the car, but I always take the transfer box out as it’s only a tiny bit more work and it’s much easier to get the thing sealed up when oil isn’t constantly dripping out of it.

It’s really common that they snap off one or both of the mounting lugs that hold the guide slipper in place. I have drilled, tapped and put a small stud in to repair them in the past

Thanks for that, I think it’s one I might take to a garage to do, it just looks like it’s going to be so much easier on a ramp and probably not a crazily long job labour wise?.
It needs a couple of glow plugs doing as well so these are first on my list.

It mostly only makes the noise from the transfer box when doing tighter turns but it’s something I want to rectify asap.

The classic noise is like a machine gun as you accelerate sharply. The chain skips over the teeth
