This and that.
I've got two guys here who use Yahoo UK as their homepage. Today (although this isn't the first time), they've both got the same problem.

If you open IE, you get a message asking if you want to download "uk.yahoo[5]" If you say 'cancel', then nothing happens. If you say 'save', and then save it to, for instance, the desktop, then IE still doesn't open. You then go and try to open IE again, and it asks if you want to download "uk.yahoo[7]". Same options, same results. Except that when to go into IE for a third time, it tries to download "uk.yahoo[7]" again (and again, and again etc).

If you right click on the IE icon on the taskbar, and select 'run as', you can open it without the downloads, but it goes to dellnet as the homepage. You can navigate ok from there, and I went to Google to try to find out what's going on but I couldn't find anything that appeared to relate to this issue.

WTF is going on?

TIA

PJ

I have a Dell with Yahoo UK as my home page in IE, and I've never heard of this problem before. Have they previously downloaded the Yahoo toobar? If so, maybe it's attempting to install a new version.

OK

1) - BTB 500: The downloaded files can't be run. No installation happens

2) - Spinal: What? A Hijack Log?

HijackThis... great little utility that aids in scanning for "suspicious" software (aparently we aren't allowed to call it malaware anymore). Generally plug in toolbars tend to play tricks like this one, but this is one I haven't heard of before.

You can find HijackThis here:

EDIT: I forgot too mention, HijackThis is VERY powerfull, and now and then willr eport some stuff which isn't really a problem.... don't delete stuff because you don't know what it does - I've had people with even more interesting problems after they tried that...

Thanks Spinal.

I d/l'd it, ran it and stared uncomprehendingly at the results for what felt like days ;) .

However, the problem has gone away on both machines just as mysertiously as is appeared.

Thanks for your help.

LOL!!! I guess that voodoo programming does work after all :D

In THEORY HijackThis does nothing unless you instruct i too, but some really annoying mal- i mean suspicious software can detect HijackThis and play their end of tricks. Anyways, if anyone ever needs help decrypting a HijackThis Log, just pop me a pm, I'll probably answer it while "working" (as usual :P)
