Ok on the subject of essential and non-essential, where does a DPF regen sit for example? If we go strictly by the book you cannot drive around while the car is doing a regen. PDF clogs up after another 3 weeks of short trips because say the person needs to go to work etc. Who is paying for...

@MrGreedy best indication for you will be the gear change points and revs at idle. The car normally idles at 600, but while doing a regen that will sit at 800. The gear change points move closer to the 2k rev mark. Exhaust note will be a bit louder as well and car will feel less responsive...

My guess based on the above info is that your car is failing to do the regen and dumping diesel in the sump. This will cause the high oil and as said it will need to be addressed ASAP. If left it can get past the seals and cause a runaway. High idle speed could be caused by the regen currently...
