New A class

Agreed seemed a bit OTT. My comment was predicated by affordability where I assumed, perhaps wrongly, that MissyD's son might be a little strapped for cash? :(

Unsure of the posters attacking Mr Filipov.

You can agree to disagree but why the personal attacks?

He just offered his opinion. You don't have to agree with him.

The reason being is, he came on here saying the A Class is an over priced hatchback that is not a proper Mercedes, and with a Renault engine fitted you have to ask yourself the question why you are buying a Mercedes in the first place. Ending with the fact he actually knows absolutely nothing about them.

Now the above is fair enough if you have lived with one, or even used one for a while, or god forbid had actually taken them out, but to slag them off and then say you know nothing about them while telling the world that a real Mercedes is a RWD big wafty cruiser, which is (what) he thinks he happens to have, just came across as sounding like a complete **** imho and offered absolutely zero help to the OP and no doubt would have probably pissed off all the A Class owners on the forum and those thinking about joining looking in.

Imho the W/S212 is far from a 'big wafty cruiser' anyway, it is well behind the W/S211 and even further behind the W/S210 in that regard anyway, in fact I would argue the 212 E Class is the model where Mercedes really lost their way in what is 'arguably' their flagship model when you look at just how many they sell and how it is promoted.
Plus, I really don't think the essence of Mercedes is a diesel engine anyway, but I wouldn't say that as I then sound as much of a **** myself. My point being is if you want to come across as "I am better than thou" wait till you have the right car to do it without making yourself look....well, I'm sure you know?

I agree, his comments were a little unnecessary and didn't really offer any assistance to the OP. I commented because I'm a current A Class owner and thought I'd be able to offer some assistance which is really what this forum is about. Whether we own an A Class or a C63, whether it is Petrol or Diesel most of us on here are Mercedes owners to some degree and we all have different opinions and ideas which is what makes this forum great. However, snobbish bullying behavior by anyone is not welcome on here, the admins make that pretty clear.

Here endeth the lesson.

Guys, I'm after some guidance please, my no.2 son is looking at getting a pre loved new shape A class. Any advice what he should look for please, thanks

I would suggest the Facelift A200 or A220, they are economical and very smart to look at, if costing becomes a problem the Pre-Facelift up to 64 PLate can be had a very reasonable prices. I has a A220 D until April and had no serious problems in nearly 3 Years, Motorway Commuting will get approx 55 MPG in the Diesel Versions.

My problem with the A class and it's derivatives (CLA, GLA etc) is that the interiors don't feel premium and yet are sold as "premium" cars.

I was set on getting a GLA but after a couple of hours with one I was not impressed. A lot of hard plastic around, a centre console that actually moved from side to side! Not good. The ride was OK, but the auto box! Woeful! I'm sticking to torque converters! And, I personally wasn't impressed with the 200d. I know it's not powerful but I did expect a bit more "uumph"! The 220d is way better by the way :)

As a side note, I wouldn't recommend any MB badged 160 or 180. A foolish young man in a CLA 180 tried (seriously) to out drag my SLC 250d off the J9 slip way onto the M1 yesterday. It was laughable!

For me, a true MB starts at a C class and has at least a 220 diesel or 250 petrol engine. Just my opinion of course... :)

Erm elsewhere really. An overpriced hatchback that is not a proper mercedes in my opinion.
If he is really set on it, then make sure it is not the 1.5 180d badge as this is the same shared renault engine, at which point you really have to question why are you buying a mercedes in the first place.
Apparently the b pillar creates a massive blind spot for taller people with the seat further back. That is what I have heard.
Other than that I know nothing to do with the a class and intend to keep it that way. Someone more knowledgeable should be along soon.
Sounds like snobbery to me!

It’s a forum and people are entitled to their opinions. I personally don’t rate the A class, at the same time I am sure many others do.

Its not a bad little car. The DSG style gearbox is not good at low speeds. Its quite jerky and not very MB like. I question the build quality a little, the ride is firm and if you are an adult sitting in the back is a challenge.

On the whole I think they are a good car. I'd have the 250 (651) diesel engine as they are superb on fuel and its pretty reliable.

Since Missy D originally posted her question in Sept 2017 one assumes her son would have formed his own opinion by now if he did indeed end up buying one. :dk:

Omg how bad that I didn't respond to this!
It's no excuse, but I had a lot going at the time... anyways, he bought an A200 AMG Sport Cdi Auto and is pleased with it.
(That must be the longest time its taken an OP to respond to their own thread).
