Was dismantling as have a noisey belt tensioner and noticed that there is some play in the viscous fan unit - when engine is running there is about 7-8mm movement in the blades. Is this within limites or does it need replacing.
If it needs replacing, then is the central nut left or right thread...
I need to change the viscous fan in the W202 before the rally...
I seem to remember there was a special wrench I needed... right?
Anyone have one I can borrow for a night or so?

It's that time in her life I'm afraid...
yes, the time where she gets all moody, overheats for no apparent cause and when you shove a carrot (or fennel when you're low on carrots) she just stops spinning.
Oh wait, I'm getting carried away...
Did a carrot test the other day, and my...
I've swapped out the idler pulley as the bearing was a bit gone.
Got a damper too but the lower bolt won't retract far enough with the water pump pulley in the way.
Query is this, is the 8mm allen / socket screw that holds the viscous fan coupling to the water pump a LEFT hand thread?
TIA
My 2002 W203 C220 cdi estate has been running too cool for a while now. It used to sit at 80deg, over the last year it has been gradually cooling, it now sits at 50 degrees even after a 60 mile run.
I always suspected the thermostat, but didn't get round to replacing it.
On Saturday I went...
Hey guys
Whats the best way to test the viscous fan ? Ive noticed mines making a noise " a loud fan noise " it gets louder with engine revs . Never noticed it before so something must be suspect with it . Is it supposed to spin from cold or do they spin all the time ? Never took much notice of...
Anyone know how i can test if the viscous coupling on my W202 C220 is doing its job correctly ? I ask because iv recently changed the water pump & changed the engine oil, left it running for half an hour, & when i came back to it the temp was nearly on 100, took it for a ride & it soon cooled...
The viscous fan on my 2001 213CDI Sprinter is running full time when the engine is on.
This would cost around £400 to replace including labour.
Is there any point in me trying to disable the fan and if so would it be safe to do so?
I did experience a temporary drop in power yesterday and...
My 190E gets a bit hot (idling in traffic even when freezing it touches 105c on the gauge). I changed the thermostat and when moving the temperature is always at 85c or so.
So, for the viscous coupling for the engine fan - how can I check it or oil (?) it to make sure it works?
guys i'm a bit stuck.
I had a go at removing the viscous coupling on my e220 W124 before i got started i downloaded a really good how to guide with pictures and everything well i got as far as removing the shroud and then got stuck the how to said something about removing a hex bolt from the...
Just completed my radiator swap (W202 C43). Will do a write up shortly.
If anyone is planning to do this on their car, or some other job that requires removing the viscous fan for any reason, and doesn't want to buy the tools outright, they could hire them from me if needed.
Hi

I'm working on a kit car for someone that has a broken viscous coupling (cooling fan clutch). I'm unsure of the origins of this viscous (i.e. whether it was supplied by Ford, GM, MB, etc) but I'm informed it may have come off a Mercedes 190E. It's a BEHR item and has the Behr part number...
