10mph - banned

They also cause accidents by driving erratically and then drive off afterwards oblivious .... ;)

Hands up all thpse drivers that actually look to their left and right as they drive through green traffic lights?

I used to make a point at standing by traffic lights and watching..........

Pulling out of a side road and turning left; how many drivers fail to look to their left? I used to make a point of watching.........

I'm sure the majority will say they do, but the reality is that very, very few drivers actually do ths and most of these that fail to look are us :)

Roundabouts
How many of us look to the right, form an opinion it is safe to proceed, then help the car in front to pull out?

As my old sergeant used to say, "The day you pass your test, is the day you start to learn bad driving habits."

Lets get everyone to retake their tests, but when we pick on the over 65's we are generally picking on a group that does that have a working income. who will pay for these tests and will it involve a medical? If so who pays? We criticise this government for their big brother atitude but what are we doing? Why aren't we all picking on the most high risk group, or does that mean picking on us? I have no problem with any law if it is fair but surely we are discriminating against the elderly but ignoring the biggest risk or killer? The 18 -25 yr old male   :)

Weirdly enough , i do actually .... my dad drummed it into me at an early age ...

Most of my driving is very early in the morning or late at night .... just the sort of times that muppets jump lights thinking ' It'll be alright , no one will be coming at this time in the day ' ...

Has stood me in good stead a couple of times ..... , pulling forward across a recently green light my way and a little hatchback comes screaming through the other way ...

When an Artic went through a red light, by looking left and right I managed to swing around to miss him and he just passed the side of my car, A police car saw this and stopped him, this was 50 years ago so I presume that I look both ways still

I've just read through all of this and there are some very opposing views. All I can say is that she didn't actually break the law but drove in a manner that was un-prdictable and therefore possibly dangerous. I remember when I took my test, one could fail the test by not keeping up with the traffic around. I'm not sure if this is a fail point any more.

She is not alone:

BERLIN (Reuters) 23 October 2007 - An 81-year-old German woman driving to a cemetery in her electric wheelchair decided to take a shortcut and drove the wrong way down an Autobahn.

The wheelchair had been traveling at 8KPH but vehicles on German Autobahns must maintain at least 60KPH and there is no upper speed limit on some sections.

Motorists spotted the woman and notified authorities, who escorted her to safety.

"She told us she got lost and wanted to avoid taking a big detour," a police spokesman in the southern city of Nuremberg said.

(The report does not of course reveal that the majority of German motorists would have boiled the witch in old engine oil and buried her with a BMW crankshaft driven through her heart. Oh alright maybe not but it is Monday)

All I can say is that she didn't actually break the law

You would be wrong in saying that. She did break the law, which is why the court system was able to deal with her in the first place.

Does that mean that if whilst driving along a motorway and my car lost power and could only manage 10 mph until the next exit I would be breaking the law?

That would quite likely be the case, yes, and it has been discussed earlier in this thread.

The woman was driving without due consideration, which is breaking the law.

If you would drive at 10mph on the motorway because you're limping home, that would likely attract the same charge if caught.

If at the same time you:

......repeatedly braked..... and ....straddled the hard shoulder of the M32.

as the lady in question was doing whilst travelling at 10mph, then the answer to that is a very big yes.

She was not banned for doing 10mph. She was banned for being a wholly useless driver presenting a clear danger to other road users

And if you were driving fully aware of what it meant to be driving at that speed you would not be driving with undue consideration. You would not be weaving from lane to lane for example and may even use the hard shoulder where apt.

<snip> I take great care and pride on my driving.
And that is one of the cornerstones of "good" driving. If more people took pride in it then there would be less of the bad stuff, IMO.

Funny you mention both traffic signals and roundabouts in the same post. Returning from Milton-Keynes yesterday I stopped at a red traffic light on the newly signal controlled roundabout over the A5. When the light turned green I looked to the right before pulling away and was astonished to find that my view was completely obscured by the signal control cabinets that are situated on the island to my right. It was absolutely impossible to see any threat from the right until after I'd started rolling. I wonder which moron designed that installation?

I advocated blanket periodic re-testing of all drivers in another post before Christmas, and continue to advocate that.

I would like to reitterate my first post on this subject....she is medically unfit to drive....full stop......

Anyone who is medically unfit - REGARDLESS OF AGE - needs to have their licence removed until fit to drive....

Whether she broke laws etc etc is irrelevant IF - the medical process was rigidly stuck to. Her doctor was fully aware of her phobias etc so IMHO he/she must bear some of the blame etc....

In today's papers ... a 77 year old man lost control of his Toyota while parking outside his house, and managed to get it onto the roof of his neighbour's Vectra:

Made the news because the man was called ... Mr Dent.

We certainly see a few of these incidents but the worse are usually youngsters showing off and killing themselves. This last week-end there was an article about four young teenagers ramming an oak tree. The tree lost some bark, but all four teenagers were killed. A tragic, tragic waste of human lives.

Last week the news made a big issue of a young child who used his father's mobile phone to contact the emergency services because his father had gone into a diabetic coma. This young father had lost consciousness as he was pulling over because he felt drowsy........... Unbelievable that the press made a big issue about the heroics of the child but the following day they filmed father and son in the car and then filmed the father driving. was he in a fit state to drive? How many other folks are there like this? By all means highlight the elderly, but let's look at the wider picture. Yong teenagers just passing their tests and driving like maniacs, medically unfit people who think it clever to either ignore medical advice, or simply not bother reporting their ailments and that is before we even think about illegal or even legal drug taking. How many of us take medication which warns us about not driving??

I am not condoning the actions of Mr Dent and we no doubt all know elderly folk that should not be driving, but I still feel the tail is wagging the dog, :) :) or the media is influencing the way we think:eek:

Regards
John the non driver
