The silver one.
Quick story bought car 16 mths ago, ran hot, bought new viscous hub, temp now sits at a needles width above the 80 degc and stays there only rising slighlty in traffic.

Last 2 weeks i have noticed the needle creeping upwards in fact last weekend i actually heard the viscous hub fully engage and its the first time i have heard it do this.

So new genuine stat (£20.47) fitted exactly the same temps, get home engine hot raise revs slightly and viscous fan cuts in and does it job, radiator is same temp all over so is good.

I am thinking water pump is on its way, just wanted to know if anyone else has replaced their water pump on their 430/55?

Cant see any way to get access to impeller without removing the pump.

Thanks Jay i am going to order one tomorrow anyway, but was just curious whether anyone else had any bother with theirs.

Hi Lynall,

I replaced the water pump on my CLK55. I still have the old one at home somewhere.

Basiscally on my one the bearing had worn badly causing the pulley to wobble. This was also allowing the impeller to rub slightly on the casing of the water pump itself.

It wasn't a particularly difficult job, just take your time. Radiator can stay in place.

I have a few pictures somewhere if you need any pointers etc.

I flushed the system several times with R.O water (distilled) and refilled with MB coolant as it wasn't all that expensive.

Probably a couple of hours work in total, maybe three including the flushing/refilling of coolant.

Will was the impeller still attached to the shaft nice and tight as i am thinking mine may be spinning on shaft hance poss temp prob i am having.

I have no play in the bearing, well none that i can see or feel.

Sure i read somewhere about merc impellers breaking up maybe on the diesels though.

Hi,

Yes the impeller was attached and running fine. There was no overheating problems or anything like that, just a slightly noisy water pump.

I have heard of impellers breaking up on MBs, as you say though not sure which models are affected. I thought it was something to do with plastic impellers - mine was all metal though.

I guess the best thing in your case would be to source a new gasket for the pump itself and some new coolant.

Drain system, remove pump and inspect. If there's nothing wrong with the water pump it's only cost you the expense of a gasket :)

Coolant change would obviously be wise regardless (or you could keep/reuse the coolant if it's fresh/recent).

Naah sod it im going to replace the pump its not a fortune and if i dont it will always be in the back on my mind, new pump ordered be here tomorrow, changed coolant when i got car and again Sat when i fitted new stat.

Checked pump again today small amount of play at the pulley also pretty sure every pic i have seen of 112/3 pump has a steel impeller.

Not convinved myself water pump at fault, so bought a new viscous hub and fitted it on and its a lot stiffer than the old one:D, so stiff in fact i can hear the bloody thing at 80mph!

Drive to work engine at normal temp stop at garage pull away and i swear the fan is pulling me along i dont need the gearbox.

Will try it over the weekend then stick on the new pump then swear at the hub supplier and get a new one.

Doesnt half shift some air though.
