I have a 1986 300TE a few months ago I had a problem with the engine coughing & spluttering when driving but would do for for maybe a week then nothing for 4 weeks then for a day might only be for 5 Min's then would clear very random,so took plugs 1&2 out and they were wet with fuel,so changed plugs, cap, rotor arm and leads no joy, then it started stalling when you stopped after 2 or 3 Min's of cranking it would start but really stunk of fuel, then one day went out to start it after 10 Min's of turning over it would just catch but under throttle would just backfire in the throttle body but would not idle.
So after a compression test 1&2 was right down so thought inlet valve problem So took head off and they didn't look to clever so rebuilt the head put it back on compression back to 14 deep joy:D ,short lived tuned it over and still the same,I spent a lot of time talking to Ian Walker over the phone and we changed injection dist body, ovp reg, inlet manifold, crank sensor and a load of other things but no joy and was feeling guilty for taking so much of his time on the phone, but have found out since that if i place a piece of card in the neck of the throttle body and just open the top flap by a hair it will idle and if I time opening the flap whilst operating the throttle by hand just right it will rev freely but that's the only way to get it to run,so to say I'm pis**d off with it is an under statement, and haven't touched for a long time so if anyone has any ideas  I'm listening:D HELP!!!!!

I have the complete test set up for your car injection and testing.

Problem is its in a huge book.

If I can scan the pages I will post you a set

If you have a plain K-Jetronic injection system then there should be a guide pin in the body of the mixture unit which sets the zero position of the air flow sensor plate. If you changed the injection distributer body this may need re-adjusting. It sounds as if the fuel pressure is wrong for some reason. It's normally controlled in the K JETRONIC by the primary pressure regulator valve on the side of the fuel distributer body which sets the operating pressure by allowing excess fuel to return to the fuel tank. There is however a second control exerted by the WARM UP REGULATOR UNIT. This functions to enrich the mixture when cold. It contains an electrically/engine heated bimetal strip and sometimes a differential pressure diaphram for fuel enrichment at full load. Its normally bolted to the cylinder head since it must follow engine temperature to work properly. If its faulty then this might be causing your problem? If your car has the later KE-jetronic then mixture control is provided by a black plastic electric-hydraulic pressure regulator on the side of the fuel distributer body and wont have this warm up regulator. explanation here http://www.auto-solve.com/mech_inj.htm
