My newly aquired 124 has long brake pedal travel (its my 5th one so I know!) the car had new brakes last year and they work fine.

I've been told that if your not carefull changing the brakes you can damage the master cylinder, and I should have one put on, before I do that any other ideas?

I've found a few cars with a long pedal. Usually the owners don't notice as they're used to it

I'd change the brake fluid as step #1 and then #2 replace the front pads if they're not of MB manufacture

Beyond that I'd be looking at discs with big steps at the edge, knackered master cylinder and ABS system with air in

I'd always recommend using a vacuum bleeder or bleeding by gravity. Gravity works brilliantly on my 1973 BMW 2002. It used to have twin remote servos till I got bored with them being so tricky to bleed and threw them away

Hi Nick
It had discs and pads all round 18 months ago, all genuine merc, so he could be right about the master cylinder

What state are the brake hoses in? Could they be old and 'balooning' as you apply pressure?

If by pumping the pedal it comes up higher then could well be the master cylinder, it should not feel rubbery in the slightest
