This one has been on the market for a while. It was advertised on AT for 10495 last summer, then on Car and Classic for 8995 in Autumn

The 'Buy It Now' of £13,450.00 shows how much in contact with reality the seller is...

Who spends £13k on overhauling the cylinder heads but runs tyres like these (Royal Explorer?)

Rear discs look like cheap ones with severely rusted hubs. Wheels look in poor shape too (nasty refurb and kerbed)

Overall, I’m sure the history file is extensive and it presents okay for the mileage (bar thr above) but who would want to own it with that sort of mileage for £13.5k?

A wannabe from Palmers Green. Innit.

Assuming that the service history is in the correct order, it looks like the top end rebuild was done around 10 years ago, so it’s possible that one of the previous owners paid that bill, and the current owner paid for the tyres.

Unfortunately, unless ther vendor has accidentally missed some services from the description, then the history is not full and complete as described in the description. It’s a but gappy based upon both time and mileage.

A quick google does not find one.....that could be because they are mainly used as toys (good news)......or they fall apart at over 130k (not such good news!!)!!!

EDIT....at the time (2016) the M156 in this CLS had done nearly 400,000 miles!.....but not in the UK.

Is anybody aware of a higher mileage M156 E63 in the UK?
No but I have one with 136,000 miles. Owners should plan to strip and refresh the top end once they approach 100,000 miles. There’s often visible wear by then - especially cam lobes and buckets - which will eventually lead to failures.

Failures seem most likely to happen at 100,000 to 110,000 miles. Best to strip and refresh it before failures happen though, as it will likely damage other components in the process, making ut a big and more expensive job.

Any tell tale signs? I always listen for start-up rattles, knocks, coolant loss, etc.
Did you strip and refresh preventatively? Or, did you wait for symptoms to appear?

Seeing the mileage of this car gives me hope. Mine is just under 100k miles and I intend to keep it going another 100k and more if I can.
Have you had to replace any major parts on your 156?

MIne's on 106K miles now. No signs of any trouble; very smooth, very quiet. Should I have fingers crossed?

I had it done as a preventative measure. Mine had slight wear on one cam lobe and corresponding bucket. I suspect that would have only b come worse so I’m glad I had the work done when I did.

No hijack intended OP just curious.

You had the 136k M156 from new?
Not quite. It was my wife’s car before mine. I’ve driven the vast majority of those miles though.

Just be ready to have some work done if the worst happens, and act quickly if the noise changes. Apparently the noise is very noticeably different (and loud) once there’s internal damage of either the cam lobe or bucket.

If that was at 100K miles, maybe I don't need crossed fingers. I only paid (relative for an M156) buttons for the ML, mainly to experience the engine, so if I had to sell it for spares or repair, I wouldn't lose a fortune. There's plenty more MLs out there...

If you can repair it yourself - or know someone who you trust to do the work and charges relatively little - then it would be worth repairing, but it’s pricey if you use a main dealer.

If you end up replacing all four cams, all four timing units, all thirty-two buckets, etc -then selling for spares may be your best option if paying someone else to do the work. It’s the sort of thing you only do because you really really want to!
