164k miles E63

Remember not to give them turbos to much stick they don't like it.

It won awards for a reason you know😉
That was fourteen years ago. It ceased production ten years ago. Wonder why?

I (and many others) have had both the 156 and the 157; you haven't. We base our opinions on experience; you don't.

The 156 is still good, but the world has moved on since 2010. So have (nearly) all of us...

It's still won more than the turboed offering has. Good things always stick around.

It didn't need to be tuned and messed with. It was, and is special from day one.

Plenty of M113s have 'stuck around' too, and the M113 was in production for fourteen years; the M156 for only eight. Wonder why?

Oh yes it did; almost from day one, like every Mercedes engine, minor mods were made in production to give incremental improvements in power and torque. Nothing like the supercharging of the M113, which was almost a paradigm shift. Wonder what a supercharged M156 could do? Wonder why Mercedes never did one?

It was superceded by a new design; another forced induction engine. Wonder why?

(I agree the M156 is special, for a given value of special, but it's not the be-all and end-all; its day has been and gone. Try an M157, ideally the 550 bhp version, and you'll know what I mean; at the moment, you don't...).

How is your blower motor version, have you driven it lately. Or have your desires taken a diversion. You can have your blower motor fascinations, I'll stick to N/A noise 😁

I'm not blindly obsessed with forced induction, the way you are with normally-aspirated. I've had both.

I still have the CLS, but I'll be selling it in the Spring, when prices are higher than at present. I like the ML a lot, and overall, prefer it to the CLS now; it's more muted, less 'in-your-face' than most AMGs - still a certain amount of iron fist, but the velvet glove is thicker - and I'm happy with that. I must be getting old...

Great post 👍🏻

You’d certainly think so, and the W166 ML 63 with the M157 is objectively a better car than the W164 ML 63 with the M156. However I personally prefer driving the W164.

I guess that’s because I decide which car to drive subjectively (preference) rather than objectively (better). That’s a balanced view as I have the opportunity to drive either.
I think your posts are always extremely well thought through and well balanced. Also totally relate to the objective vs subjective point too.

Luckily we have so many great models to choose from. I think I'm in the raw phase currently , unrefined high revving cars are rocking my boat right now but at some point I'm sure I'll wake up one day and think i want that velvet glove. But that day is not today !
