164k miles E63

Main dealer? No chance. Repair myself? Not any more - too old, too creaky, too idle anyway...

It runs well now, and I suspect it will continue to do so. If not, well, in Terry Gates I trust...

(If this one has been up for sale when I bought mine, I'd have had it if it was as good as it looks): Mercedes Benz ML63 | eBay

Yes agree, like any engine maintenance is key. Keep them monsters running and sounding so good 😊

Great colour combination, so rare to have grey leather. Swap the HU out for COMAND and that would be lovely. Interesting to see that the cup holders appear to have been replaced.

Is E55BOF a convert to the mighty 156? 😀

I'm afraid not. It's good, very good, but it's not terribly suited to an ML-type vehicle, and the 550 bhp M157 has much more torque lower down the rev range, which I personally prefer to the more "sporty" 156. The ML63 with the 156 is a Jekyll and Hyde thing; at normal throttle openings, it's quick all right, but nothing special, then push the throttle through the gate and all hell suddenly breaks loose; there's no middle ground...

If your handy with spanners, the M156 is a lovely engine to work on. It's a little bit like Lego Technic 🔧 🙂

Mines got 122k approx, confident should get at least 200k+

Will be doing my valve stems this summer, looking forward, should be a days work for me. The rubber stems normally start to disintegrate from around 120k, so it's about the right time. ✅

Its a very special engine 🙂

Is the ml 4 wheel drive all the time or does it have an option to 2 wheel and 4 wheel.

Permanent 4WD.

I was thinking that cold be the reason the car doesn't feel as exciting as a Rw drive car. Explains the more conservative approach to the power being driven compared to a Rw drive car.

Alex of Legitstreetcars has titled this wrong . He's just making everyone aware of what to look out for.

I don't think that's it. The M156 came out of the factory with the power characteristics it has, and I prefer cars with lots of low- and mid-range torque, which it does not have, that's all. An M113K in the ML would be much better suited to the car.

I think you will find it come out the factory with many different Hp figures. Not just the 450 c63 the 525 hp version is available also. 75 HP increase.

Also a rw driven car is much greater fun that a 4 wheel drive shed lol.

A car will be more agile in the Twisties than a shed on steroids. I have a feeling any engine in the cumbersome ml body will never feel as fun than a cars lower gravity chassis.

Mine has either 507 or 517 bhp (I've seen both quoted. I'm not bothered enough to check). It ain't no shed either, sunshine.

It's not about the handling, or the power, it is (and always has been) about the power delivery of the engine. It's about putting on more throttle in the outside lane to ease past a slightly slower car going up a motorway incline, and nothing much happens unless you use the kickdown, when everything happens at once. Either a 113K or a 157 will do the job without the Sturm und Drang, and I prefer that.

m156 the finest -

Think how much better it could have been with an M157... :D

All right, all right; let's not turn this into a circular 156 vs 113 vs 157 debate, shall we? All three engines are excellent, but not the same, and all three have their adherents. Horses for courses...

You are my sunshine my only ☀️

The sheds aren't as agile as the car versions in all types. Enjoy the shed old chap 👍😁 the w211 m113k was only ok on the straights. Wasnt much of a twisties car especially compared to the w212 chassis.

Who wants turbo lag or SC kick in on a corner 🤦

Id sooner be in a N/A engine any day.

157 is best suited to the larger oap sheds, nothings beats N/A

I'm like you in that once introduced to forced induction, I'm disappointed to go back to n/a.
Not knocking the M156 at all. Its a great proven engine that sounds wonderful, but supercharged or turbocharged all the way for me.
You just cannot beat the low down torque.

It permanently drives all four wheels although it’s rear biased with 60% of torque sent to the rear wheels.
