17" to 18" Wheels

I just noticed the other downside to large, slim-spoked wheels! Makes your brakes look a bit wimpy! Rich you gotta admit your brakes look tiny now! ;)

This is why I like the idea of the Styling IIs, they hide the brakes. They also don't collect brake dust in the same way and are dead easy to clean ;) .

i prefer to answer with this in the style of a guru or religious figure - with another question....

who needs brakes?

actually you are quite right 'nd i have thought this a few times. I was going to get fancy calipers on when i had mine replaced last - bit didnt want to draw attention to the fact that my brakes are off a Hyundai Getz. Suggestions, anybody!!!!!!?????

how big could i go, i want lost of holes in mine! surely the sport brakes from a 203 sport would go on - i believe someone commented on them in flash's pics?

The 203 sport brakes and calipers would go straight on yours with basically no problems. IMHO if you're going to replace the brakes and calipers you might as well get the AMG ones though, a brake upgrade is pretty expensive and the price jump to the AMG parts probably isn't as much as you think.

Please note that I know nothing about brakes, but most mercedes parts are basically interchangable! ;)

these would look fine on my CLK 55 .. the discs are quite big, especially at the front. On a good day, you can even see AMG on the discs (the cylindrical bit)

figure the price cant be too savage - i paid 160 for new pads about 4000m ago so they would be fine - discs???dunno but aftermarket ones are not THAT pricey.

AMG - £££££ methinks! Anyone know the price of AMG discs?speak up, or for ever hold your peace!

BTTT

Since a few members have changed to 18" recently, would be interested and grateful for their observations/comments on what the increase in size has meant for handling noise and ride comfort

Thanks!

I went from standard 16's to 18" AMG Styling III's with Pirelli P Zero Rosso's (see gallery for pics, links in sig).

I put them on about 2 days after getting the car so can't say we noticed any negative difference in the ride on normal roads (although I've still got soft Elegance suspension at the moment!).

Pros - I found that it handles much better, and looks fantastic no real difference in road noise

Cons - rough roads / cobbled streets etc aren't fun!

I'll add to the comment about paranoia when parking. I badly scuffed one of mine after about a week after putting them on  Anyway I got lucky and found a single one on ebay for about £40 without a tyre! Keep meaning to get the other one re-furbed but aint gotten around to it yet....

A new member of 18" Club

After much stalking of eBay, belly aching, worrying and all that, I finally swapped my 17" AMG Style I for nearly new (done 1000 miles) 18" AMG Style III.

FR: 7.5J ET37 225/40/18
RR: 8.5J ET30 255/35/18

They have transformed the look of the car. I love them  :D :D

The quality of the ride is not really affected. Yes, it's slightly worse over London potholes, but generally no real difference. As for road noise, there's no real difference as well.

Handling is sharper.

The front calipers are much more visible now, and you can see the ////AMG markings on them! I didn't know they existed.

Thanks all for all your suggestions on this 'difficult' journey.

Looking great Sean - well done :bannana:

Looks great! The same wheels I went for on the C320, wish I had your brakes though! I think big wheels need larger or more impressive discs!

Welcome to the 18" club !!!, they look great.

Peter.
