Hello, I'm thinking of getting a 190E 2.0 Auto as a run around. What kind of mpg can I expect, my driving style is pretty gentle and it's mainly Devon A roads at around 40 - 50mph.

Thanks a lot

That's not too bad, factoring in lower fuel price than diesel, and pretty reasonable service and repair costs it might be a rather cheap car to run.

Total buttons to run. I had a 2.0 Auto for a while, just loved it. I seem to remember 25ish MPG when bobbing about to shops and local school runs. 30+ was never a problem on a run.
If you have longish arms and no engine undertray its one of the few cars you can do an oil change on from up top. Just kick a washing up bowl underneath the appropriate place undo the sump plug by leaning over from the top of the engine bay and change the oil filter upstairs (as it were) too. Gotta be careful you don't cross thread the sump plug on the way back in though.

I like 190's.

As Trapperjohn above 25-27 MPG overall-- bit lower in urban motoring a bit higher on a run but a lack of 5 gears in the autobox and overall gearing mean you lucky to get out of the low 30's--- Great cars though---- I had 2 and did 100,000 + in each- never let me down.:thumb:

As above, reliable little cars that cost buttons to run, and are easy to work on.

Buy a nice one and it'll always be worth the same or more when you come to sell it.

No worries about the mpg when they're this cheap unless you're doing mega miles :)

Nail on the head, Will. Great cars and why worry about fuel prices when you've zero depreciation.

The only problems I've had with them are rotten front shock absorber top mounts and broken springs

Brilliant cars, very under-rated and under-valued

Thanks very much for all of your advice chaps, the search is on

When I had mine , it was typically low 30's in normal use . I do remember doing a brim-brim check over two tankfuls on a run from Scotland down to Cardiff and back , worked out at 43 mpg , with a door on the roofrack and three more in the back coming back ! That was doing 70 mph most of the way there and back .

That was my early B reg 190E , with 14" wheels - don't know if the newer ones with 15" wheels will do better ?

Went and had a look at a couple today at Deane Vale Motors near Taunton, both 115k ish, both FSH with MB or specialist, both owned by the same chap, one blue black one non metallic black (lovely looking car) with air con, heated seats and cruise on top of standard spec. Both cars in very good condition, one £1200, one £1300.

The thing is, I didn't get the love! I adore W124's and have a cabrio, and thought a W201 would be a smaller W124, which I suppose it is, but I couldn't get excited about them.

If anyone else is interested then they are worth a look, the black one especially is rather nice and with a couple of dings taken out of the body work would be in superb condition all round.

I really wanted to like them! I'm going to ponder some more.

You have to take a decent drive in one to get it .

A 4 cyl W201 has a superb chassis , even better than a W124 , which soaks up all the bumps just as well as its bigger brother , but can be hustled along a twisty road in a way that would make a 124 feel just a bit uneasy ( not that it wouldn't do it ) . The 2.6 is just a bit nose heavy and not quite as 'chuckable' , but makes up for it with extra power and smoothness , although the M102 is still surprisingly refined .
