1974 W115 Vin Number

Cheers ! My Vin number, both in the car's slip and inside the hood on the little plaque, contains only numbers (8 digits). How can I decipher the rest of it? Several parts websites and others ask for a 17-digit Vin , that contains letters that refer to all the other info on the car. How do most of you get around this? Thanks a lot !!
