The owner's manual for my car (300TD) says the centre button on the aircon controls should be marked 'EC' and the aircon is actually off when the light is lit. Perversely logocal in a teutonic way I suppose!

Fine, but the centre button on mine is the more usual snowflake aircon symbol and seems to work in the proper 'round earth' way, i.e. the aircon is on when the light is lit.

Was this a change on the late series-2 W124s that is not documented in the manual? Are there any other changes to note?

Also, every other car I've had with aircon dehumidifies the air as a matter of course, why does MB feel the need to have a separate button for it?

W124 aircon

If your controls are different and work ****-about-face it's probably a retrofit aircon system. The giveaway is normally an aircon plate rivetted to the slam panel. This plate gives the weight of gas to charge the system with and it may not be the same as a factory system. Be cautious when having the system regassed!

There are lots of retrofitted W124s about

Weird! Looks totally stock though, I'll check the slam panel tomorrow and maybe post a pic of the controls.

Yup, it is an aftermarket system right enough! Made by Diavia, I found the user manual in amongst the pile of documentation I got with the car.

Works well enough though and at least they seem to be represented in the UK should anything go wrong.

my previous w124 had an aftermarket system installed with r12 gas and had the snowflake button but i was told by an aircon specialist that the dehumidifyer button on these aftermarket systems serve no purpose as they do not work with climate controls. its a simple case of on or off with the air being directed to the windscreen should it mist up whereas the ec on factory fitted cars works with the climate controls.
