Have just been offered a 1 owner 60,000 mile car.I don't do may miles and wondered what sort of running costs it may require to do 5000 miles per year. It's a lovely old car, just toying with the idea of using it instead of a 2 year old Saab 95 Auto.

15 mpg
180 quid a tyre 5000 miles per back set, 8000 on the fronts
thats a good year, and very low mileage - mine has done 160,000...

drive it - you will never want to drive anything less again.. :D

15 mpg!! bloody hell .Hoped it would be at least 18 and may be low 20's.How come tyre life is so short? It's the CL or a 52 plate 95 Aero Auto.I know chalk and cheese but it does look like the Saab will be a lot Cheaper.Service every 12k 28-30 mog 0-60 under 7 secs and 149 mph.Is the CL a bit of a barge?

2.2 tonnes, 17 feet long, 6'2" wide, six litre V12 engine... make your own mind up. 20 mpg is possible on a run...

tyre wear is bad as they are so heavy. btu good tyres and gentle drivbing will increase this a lot..

What do you think is a good price to pay?
97P CL600 AUTO 65K IN METALLIC BLUE.It is in very good condion with full history

10 - 18K

Difficult to say - the 600 is 'less' desireable as it is more costly to run, but has better status and is quicker, and has more toys as std.

where is it? If its im my neck of the woods I'd be happy to give it a test drive / check it out with you.. I know mine quite well now...

Bristol. How come there is such a wide margin of prices? In parkers it says £20,160 at a dealers down to £13,700 for private poor condition sale/car.Surely its got to be worth more than £10,00o if its a horrible wreck?

that was just a guess - i paid the equivilant of 13 for mine two years ago.

my mum lives over there... but a bit far just to pop over. :)

If you like it, and can afford the running costs, then 20 is still ott imho.

most of the 500s go for 10 - 15 depending.

that is very low mileage tho' adn is it immaculate, with good tyres and FSH?

wind the windows up and down on auto a few times, make sure they dont false stop. check all the vacuum systems (inc boot) several times. check air con - with a thermometer (stick it in the central vent) - check all the vents open and close with the control doofer (or use the test procedure listed here - http://www.continentalimports.com/ser_ic40142.html )
check it goes in a straight line - it will pull to the left in the slow lane, but should be straight in the correct ^h^h^h fast lane..they are sensitive to camber changes.
check by running all the leccy stuff you can at the same time, and putting the steering on full hard lock that the engine doesnt vibrate any more (thats worn motor mounts)

pm me and ill give you my number if you want to phone me whilst you are viewing it.

it is one seriously lovely car - but if you have to question the running costs so closely - is it worth it? Are you going to be looking at your fuel consumption and tread on your tyres each time you take it out.
:(

for me - having such a nice car is for enjoyment - if you can't enjoy it coz you're worried about what it's costing to run then it's just not worth it.

Have you tried an insurance quote on it yet? That might push it even further away :(

You need to consider the marginal cost i.e.how much extra it will cost over and above the saab.
Forget fuel consumption - doing 5k miles a yr the extra fuel cost will be only a couple of hundred quid.
As long as you keep it away from a main dealer the running costs needn't be excessive (unless you are unlucky with things going wrong, and this is no different for the saab).
Insurance could be the killer - can you get a restricted mileage policy?

Overall - if you want it, BUY IT. Its only money and you only live once. You'll love it every time you use it/gaze at it from your window/wash it every sunday morning.....

I have a 1995 CL500 and its a wonderful car to drive. The 600 is more expensive to run I get 20 to 25mpg which for a large car isn't to bad. I have done 6.5k miles and the tyres are still good. The 600 cost about 23k more than the 500 when new but there's a lot more to go wrong on a 600 (but I would still have one if the price was right)
Parking in Tesco's can be fun the car will just fit in the bay but you might not be able to get out, 17 foot long coupe's have very long doors.
The car has real presence people move out of you way when you come up behind them on motorways(sometimes even BMWs)
Get one stick a private plate on it and people will think you have spent 20 or 30k.

private plate - like C140 MB ? :p

actually C14 OMB...

re- mpg - maybe that says somthing about how I drive - i get 21 mpg and not a lot out of my tyres.. its too easy to put your foot down..

No one will give way to a Merc in Bristol they are road savages  (far worse than London in my opinion) But on the subject of parking the car, where car parks display signs refusing to accept liability for damage to your car, I take as many spaces as I need to assure that my car is safe from damage although I never take disabled or parent spaces. Only fair I feel :D
