1998 c220 cdi intermittent epc warning lamp

Hi All.

I have a problem with this car that I purchased used. sometimes while driving the EPC warning light comes on and the engine loses power and blows white smoke from the exaust, Stopping the car and turning the engine off and restarting cures problem for a while. It seems this is a completely random fault as sometime I can drive forty miles or more before
fault shows itself. (the loss of power is the limp home mode I believe)
If anyone out there has had this problem before and can help me I would
be very happy to hear from you. incidentally I do not have a handbook for this car so I don't know what the EPC warning lamp means.

Thanks in advance.
Mike.

ECP light

i think you should get it to someone that can read the fault codes (the plug is in the black plastic box on the passenger side of the engine bay near the windscreen). if the ecp light comes on and stays on this means one of the major sensors has picked up a fault - you are right about the limp home mode

i have exactly the same problem on my 1997 C220. its quite random so i've just been living with it. i have discovered that my ECP light only comes on after releasing the gas pedal specifically when the brake is applied

i reset the fault codes and took another reading when the ECP light had come on twice. the new stored codes were

- P1228 [injection pump quantity stop]
- 123, 125, 127 [no prefix on the fault code]
- B1470 [fuel meter sensor B4 open discontinuity]

does anybody know what to do next?

Thanks

Hi OSC.
Thanks for information, Will do a check on the wiring of the sensors etc.
and like you, see if there is any way I can deliberatly make the fault show. I Was thinking that it Might be a blocked diesel filter or something in the fuel line causing the problem.
will get back to you when I discover anything interesting.
Thanks again.
Mike.

I would not drive the car until you've had it on MB Diagnostics. From the sounds of it its a major fault, diesels don't start puffing white smoke! You may end up causing more damage to the engine.
