1999 C43 AMG With Faulty Gearbox

It would need to stay low to remain a bargain, but if as clean as it sounds, it could be a nice car for say a resident mechnaic that wants a nice pristine vehicle despite it's miles to give the correct impression to his customers - Olli! Not too old, not too new.

I think I agree with Graham, I wouldn't pay loads more for it than the current price.

You've got to allow about 2 grand to sort the gearbox, then tidy it up (dents/corrosion etc). It'll still be a 132K C43 after all that.

Say you pay £2K for it, £2K for a new gearbox, £1K to sort out any niggles, paintwork etc. Not worth a whole lot more than the £5K it'll cost you, plus you've got to get it recovered, and the hassle of getting it all together.

Hang on Will that body ding is £150 max and more like £100 as nothing else needs blending in that position

Read it again Malcolm, I think you've mis-read it :o I was saying £2k for a new gearbox and £1k to sort out any niggles, paintwork etc.

Not £1k just on paintwork! - I mean niggles that he hasn't noted, eg faulty air con, oil leaks, etc. If anything, that's very conservative, but still fair.

There's always a few faults with any secondhand car, especially an 8 year old, 132K mile one with a duff gearbox ;)

Will

Possibly, but I think he's dreaming with the price. I wouldn't pay £1200 for a second hand gearbox out of a car with no warranty from a private seller. 42K miles - hmm, maybe but still not new and you just don't know what you're buying.

They're only something like £2K brand new from MB with warranty.

BTW, the car is on £3K now, I think that's nearly made all it's money really, not a cheap car for much longer.

Yet the reserve is still not met

If it was an economical repair, I wonder why the seller hasn't had it done?

I think the reserve price is a little optomistic, and people are getting over-excited at the apparant bargain that they are getting!

eBay fever ;)

The Gearbox may be nothing more that the electronic plate inside gone faulty.....£250 - £300 should sort that out.

It may be a lot of things, but with the greatest of respect, if it was just a £250-300 repair on such a flagship vehicle, I would expect the seller to have had the repair done at his expense prior to selling.

He seems to know a bit about these cars as he's had two ;)

True I guess....in that case he isn't being 100% honest about it all eh....also looking at the amg wheels they don't look like original AMGs as I don't see AMG stamped on them.

all c43's had the darker cluster too... seems like someone has put some cheepo pre facelift looking lights in..

I agree, the wheels look like fakes from what I can see in the pictures. I wouldn't want fake wheels on a genuine C43 AMG.

Also, if the tyre sizes he has quoted are what is on there, he's got the wrong size front tyres. What with this, the body marks and rust, the faulty gearbox, the high mileage and silly bits which would need sorting out I'm not sure it's going to be a cheap car for anyone.

All these sorts of issues will quickly add up to rectify and this could easily turn into a money pit.

He mentions them in the description - yep, they're dodgy 'crystal' aftermarket lights.

Its those aftermarket LED ones from ebay. Much prefer the original facelift smoked ones !

£2K was a reasonable price for a project for someone, £3K if you've got the parts to fix at your disposal and are handy with the spanners might make it viable. It's still not met the reserve though, wonder what he's looking to make?

Jay, how much would you expect that car (with 132K miles) to fetch at auction, if it was in full working order - ie, drivable without a knackered gearbox? And, for that matter, with original AMG wheels and no eBay lights!
