1999 w202 - strange noise @2500 rpm

Hi

I noticed today that my 1999 c200 momenterily makes a slightly metallic rattle as you drive through 2500 rpm (just before it changes up when cold). It does not make the noise on overun, but it does when reving past this point in nuetral.

I think it is coming from under the car, could it be a loose heatshield or a failing exhaust?

Does anyone have any ideas where to start looking?

Either rattly cat or loose heatshield.

Thanks Dieselman, I guess the best thing will be to get car into the air and start looking. Are the heatshields limited to the area round the cat?

I have found the problem, the welded mounting on the front pipe has gone, has anyone else had this problem? Can I just get it welded by my local garage?
