I'm sorry to have to ask this but i've searched and searched with no luck...
Could someone point me in the direction of instructions for the '2 jack' method of removing springs from my W202? I know it's not the safest way but i've done worse before and it's a nightmare getting the correct tool shipped to guernsey (where i live!)

Cheers, James

Are you sure???? You'll kill yourself!! Surely you can borrow/rent the tool... Your life is far more important isnt it?? Do you know how much tension a suspension spring holds??

Believe me i'd love to rent the tool, but the only place with one over here is the merc stealer. Unsurprisingly enough, they won't rent it out, and they want £300 min to fit the springs.
I'm well aware how much power there is in an average car spring, and i'm also aware how much more force than average there is in a merc spring!

Anyway, to cut a long story short, i've decided i'll try the two jack method. From what i've found out so far as long as it's done carefully and properly it's not too bad so i figured i'd give it a try. I'm a very careful and considered person with a backgroung in engineering so i should be ok, hopefully!
All i need to do now is check the way i'm assuming it's done is correct!

Thanks for your concern,

James

Try here

But DM had the luxury of doing this in a proper garage with a proper ramp/lift. There's no way I'd do this with a couple of trolley jacks on the driveway (have done with the aid of a proper compressor).

Cheers for that one, that's exactly what i'm looking for. I'll have a look at things tomorrow, test everything out and decide from there whether i'm going to go for it or end up paying a ridiculous amount for fitting. I'm pretty confident i can manage it, but won't go ahead if i feel i'm really endangering myself.
If anyone's got any particularly helpful bits of information i'm all ears!

Cheers for the help again guys,

James

Someone mentioned these the other day - not as meaty as the proper tool though.

Instructions link doesn't contain any rating.

Hmm, yeah i had a look at a set of these the other day but i've gotta admit they don't look too tough to me! I'd rather trust a trolley jack lowering the spring down so i can remove it under no compression than trust that compressor while i take it out still compressed!
Cheers for the pointer though!

James

larby you mention over here where is over here as i live in ni and i have sring tools if that is any help

If the front springs are too long to fully release the tension when dropping the wishbone then either fit regular spring clamps or fabricate some out of steel or chain wrapped into the spring.
You can then use regular clamps once the spring is off the car.

The draper clamps are only assister's for use in conjunction with regular clamps.

If undoing the inner arm bolt you will need a four wheel alignment afterwards.
