Surfing the web, and have found that some Diesel owners are putting 2 stroke oil into their Diesel, in small proportions, to give better acceleration, smoother running and less soot.
Anyone here tried it and what conclusion did you come up with?

Yes I have done it many times on many Diesel cars I have owned and still do (when I remember to)..
Engine smoother and generally less clattery..

Its widely done in the US more than here.
The idea is to compensate for the fact that Ultra low sulphur Diesel has less lubricity that the old Diesel.

I have read several times now that you should use the NON synthetic type of 2T oil...

2 stroke oil in modern cars on a common rail and precision injectors? Doesn't sound good to me but I can see why as SSpeed points out. Anybody got any experience of doing this on a modern expensive common rail set up :dk: I'm now curious

Between you and I Ian I have done it on all my MB's..

We are talking of 250 cc's in 80 litres of Diesel..
Diesel is a form of oil and so is 2T.. It mixes together seamlessly..

Pretty common occurrence on the D3 and RRS forums...

Cheers Simon

Now I'm really interested the question being whats the difference between Premium diesel, branded diesel + Millers and branded diesel + 2 stroke oil.

I need to have a look at the chemistries of diesel + 2 stroke and see the mixing compatibility and combustion characteristics and burn.

After this there's only one way to tell so might give it a go as I can definitely tell when I have Millers additive in the tank engine is a lot quieter and smoother. Put Tesco's or Morrisons diesel in and it runs like a bag of nails a lot louder and lumpier.

Will post back after my homework:thumb:

I use it in my RRS and have done so for 6 months now, with no problems at all. It makes the car a lot smoother especially on cold start ups and their is a slight MPG increase.

I've been adding around 300ml (0.5% ish) of 2 stroke for around a year and 15000 miles now and feel that the car does run better with it. I have missed on a few occasions when I've run out of 2 stroke and noticed the difference. My next experiment is going to be very small (100ml per tank full) doseing with acetone. E220Cdi S211. I have posted figures on the other side, but the consumption difference is too small to clearly attribute to the addition, and may be explained by the other usual suspects; journey length, OAT, cruising speed. etc. I was prompted to go this route by other threads (notably the extensive chat on the Land Rover site) and following a leak at the HP pump at 128,000 miles which I attributed to the reduced lubricity of modern fuel. Go for it.

I tried acetone in my E300TD. Didn't make any noticable difference.
As its a solvent, I stopped using it as I was worried it might either do horrible things to seals/plastic pipes, or possibly shift any rubbish/deposits that were in the tank and thus clog the filter.
I've no real evidence that it would do that, but given that it was making no difference to performance all I could see was potential downsides, so risk/reward said stop!

Hmm.

I would try adding something unintended to my lawnmower or chainsaw but would baulk at doing so in a car worth anything over £500 let alone one worth over £20k

Redex injector cleaner is essentially 2T.

I have never noticed any difference when using it, so stick to Millers...which works out cheaper if bought in bulk.

You don't need an upper cylinder lubricant in a diesel engine, the diesel acts as a lubricant.

For non-DPF vehicles you use JASO FB or higher & for DPF fitted vehicles you must use JASO FC or higher.

My Sprinter has a DPF fitted and i use Castrol Actevo 2T which is JASO FC rated, no problems at all.
