Just thought I would share this with everyone. I fitted a brand new Mb gearbox to the above mentioned car a couple of weeks ago (damaging my health in the process). Changes gear so smooth. Ah but the engine was in limp mode or so it seemed. Would not go over 3000rpm and was producing 23mpg. Spoke with Oliver (BlackC55) who I feel sure must have been fed up with me. Anyway after doing all he suggested (this guy is the all knowing Merc guru) I still had the problem. Today I managed to solve the problem. Sooooooooo easy I should have noticed it straight away. When pressing the throttle the inlet pipe from the side of the rad to the turbo was collapsing and causing air starvation. Remedy, refit the plastic pipe properly (it had become dislodged whilst the engine had been tilted to allow access to the top bell housing bolts). Sorry about the post, I just feel very happy and wanted to share.

Sometimes the simple things are just overlooked. The other day I was helping out a friend with his '80 BMW 323i. We could'nt get it to start despite having sparks and fuel going in. Turned out that the distributor was 180º off - reminded us that a 4 stroke has TWO tdc's! Simple as that

I love how it can be the simplest of things :bannana:

When this happens normally you can hear a rush of air escaping from the pipe.

Pop your head out of the window while booting.
