I am thinking of changing my 1999 E300td , I would like a E Again but an estate this time. Which is the best engine to get!. Its reliability i am looking for. I Know some engines are better than others so your advise would be great

From what I've seen, the E270 with the straight 6 is probably the best performance/economy/value compromise. I think you'd find the 220 underpowered compared to your E300 and the economy gains appear to be very marginal. I'm not too sure when the new V6 engines started to appear in the estates, but they are certainly less economical that the straight 6. The V6 engines may or may not be less reliable than the straight 6, but the latter engine just seems to go on and on and . . . .

I'm sure other will soon chime in with their views, too!

A 220cdi is fine, but reckon the 270cdi (in line 5 cylinder BTW) will be better. The best bet is a 04 E320cdi with I6 engine. Super economy + big power and no rust.

Hi JRGGINO,
Mines a 270 CDI avant estate. In the last 6 months ive had it, it's performed beautifully. On avg I get 42MPG (remember it's an estate!) on a long run and around 30 urban. If I am very careful, I have seen 47 on a long run. I'm sure I can coax it to do more, but happy with it for the mo. BTW, it's 177bhp, only 7 more than the facelifted 220 CDI's iirc. The only thing I regret not having is park assist, it is hugely helpful if youre going from a saloon to an estate (like me). Mine is also a 7 seater, handy if you have kids (reason why I went fo an e estate).
Mine is a 54 plate (registered 05), it has SBC (sensotronic brakes or brake by wire), this had a fault when I first had it, fixed under warranty, I also had a problem with the airbags, again fixed under warranty, both small issues, I was told would not have cost much to fix at an indie. Overall, very satisfied. Hope this helps with your search.
