hi guys the drivers side xenon bulk bulb on my cl63 has stopped working so I've purchased 2 new bulbs to replace both front headlights. I've had a look in the engine bay and the lights are not easily accessible - can anyone give me any advice or tips on how to get access to replace the bulbs?

Thanks in advance for any help

You should have swapped the bulb with the one from the other side first to check.

Normally these bulbs go pink before failing. Did yours do that?

It could be a ballast/igniter issue :thumb:

Best swap the working bulb over before opening the pack of new ones, that way you can return them if you diagnose another issue.

Good luck.

I would if I could figure out how to get access to the bulbs. Currently looking like a bumper off job unfortunately unless anyone here has changed a bulb on a w216 CL before and knows any different?

Guide is here pal, D1S xenon bulb replacement...DIY or How-To? - MBWorld.org Forums

Looks like passenger side is easier. Just unmount expansion tank, drivers sound like a bit more effort.

Guide on link above has pics etc. Good luck.

Thanks for finding the guide, the photos are not loading up on my phone though - are you able to see the 6 photos?

Unfortunately my drivers side bulb is blown but I'll be replacing both to keep the same bulb colour

Yeah I can see the photos, I will screenshot it and upload for you. Hold on.

If someone posts a question that I know the answer to I will be the first to offer my help. Didn't know I was required to contribute to the forum before I could ask others for help?

In 8 months you have only posted a handful of times, each time asking for help, then you complained that noone on this free forum was able to help you.

A simple 'bump' message would have sufficed.

Fair point, to be honest I'm probably like many casual forum users in that I tend to post when I have a problem. Big thanks to abs clk320x for pulling the rabbit out of the hat. I was about to concede defeat and give the car in to a garage for repair

Hopefully it’s only the bulb, fingers crossed. Let us know how you get on :-)

Cheers and I will definitely update you guys with how I get on. I'm pretty sure it's the bulb because it went pink the day before it stopped working. The same thing happened on my Range Rover about 6 months ago and when I replaced new bulbs it fixed it so touch wood it's the same for the AMG

If it went pink, then it’s almost certainly the bulb. Mine did the same. :-)

So I had a go at replacing the bulbs today, turned out to be a bit of a nightmare. I had a go at the drivers side first by moving the coolant expansion tank - the furthest I could get was to remove the old bulb. I found it impossible to reinsert the new bulb with one hand down the tight gap and put the plug back in and get the bulb into its socket without touching the xenon glass.

I then tried to remove the wheel arch lining - there are 3 pop pins which I got out as per the instructions but what the instructions fail to mention is there a a couple more screws behind the strut that have to be removed to get the lining out. I then tried removing the wheel but one of the wheel nuts was so tight I couldn't undo it. At this point I threw the towel in and put everything back together as it was starting to get dark.

All this hassle to change a bulb

Ouch :-(

Get a box of Nitrile/Latex gloves online then you don’t need to worry about touching the bulb. About £7 for a box of 100 on amazon.

I was wearing latex gloves, the problem is trying to get the bulb in through such a tight gap and then somehow plugging it in. Also even with latex gloves on if you touch the surface of the bulb on the sides of the housing or if there is any dirt on the gloves (some dust is inevitable) you still run a high risk of creating a hot spot on the bulb.

The only clean way to put the bulb in either side is via the wheel arch lining in my opinion
