I am staggered at the extent of depreciation on a CLS63 in my local dealer's. The car has 9000 miles and is for sale at £41,000.

Price new over £80,000 !

Next to it was a new E320 cdi which could be yours for £46,000 which looked expensive in comparison.

So, my question is this, will th C63 that was in the showroom at over £50,000 be worth £25,000 in a year? Nice car but cheap interior and more deserving of a £25k price tag IMO.

It strikes me that £25k at the moment can buy an awful lot of nearly new second hand Merc. but not much of a new one.

Same here. Friend of mine recently picked up an '07 e92 M3 for €35k in a private sale. That was the most staggering price dropped I've heard of; they are €100k new.

Another dealership has dropped a maximuk specced C63 from an original new price of €119k to €89k. Still at that price 3 months later.

However, there is significant amount of truth to Clarkson's comment about the musical chairs as you are stuck in your current car if you need a trade-in.

Hmm, doubt it.

I was offered one for £39k last week, and seriously considered it, but they are being advertised at just over £40k now so not that much of a bargain really.
I think they will be down to £35k retail by Feb/March and trade bids of £27-30k depending of they think they have a hope of selling them or not.

Then it will level out, I still think an 08 plate car in 3 years will still sell for £20k private and get trade bids of £18/19k.

E63 still has a long way to fall, will look like an old model in 6 months when the new E is out, and it has that massive V8 with a drink problem. So those that can really afford will want a new one and those that can't......well they want it really cheap.
You can't convince yourself that spending more than you really wanted is alright cause it is a nice frugal car that is going to hold its value well like an E320cdi will, so that drives prices down.

Alot will depend on
1. Who still has a job
2. Has Darling increased VED above and beyond expectations or repealed his decision
3. Cost of Oil.
4. Have Mercedes gone bust.

Interesting point re an E63 but would a potential biuyer of a c63 not think also about the bigger (and far superior car). I'd pay a £5k premium used for a 211 63 over a 204. They are worth it.

The C class has all those attributes bar the old model bit, but the 212 may well be ugly and that may see buyers wanting the last of the older car.

I guess it depends what you want from a car, I would have always chosen the C63 over the E63 given two cars the same age and spec if there were the same price.

But I am falling for the E in a big way, however, a lot of people are saying the C63 is the best Merc ever made, so I guess they would choose the C every time.

Seems that most bigger, luxury cars are depreciating at the rate of about 50% per year.
So........
New = £80,000 (for example)
Year 1 = £40,000
Year 2 = £20,000
Year 3 = £10,000
After year 4, a different set of rules kick in and many things like history, condition and mileage are more important.
And of course, after year 3, the dreaded MOT rears its ugly head..............

Thats my current perception anyway.

I would say they are still loosing the same over 3 years as they always have, well maybe a little more, say 60% instead of 50-55%.

I think the main difference is they are loosing a good 45% or more in year one.
So that £80k car is worth £45k at year one, then it looses another 10% of list in year two making it a £36k buy and it looses the final 5% in year 3 bringing it down to £32k.

This is the same for just about every marque, be it the M5, S6, E63 etc. etc.

A couple of years back you would buy that £80k car, drive it for 12 months and sell it for £75k as there was a wait for them.

Thats why i never buy a brand new car (and i dont care how rich i am, i probably never will). Depreciation just makes my eyes water, i was trying to get a trade in for my 202 and some people even offered me £1500 for it!! i bought the bloody car last year with 60k miles for exactly double that! :(

Yes. I estimate my W203 (see my avatar) is currently worth about half what I paid for it about 16 months ago.
I paid £17,000 last July and now I would be lucky to sell it on for £8500.
Not that I want to. Just a comment.

Surely a trade bid of £1500 against a car that cost you £3000 the year before is good isn't it??

He would retail that for say £2500, so real world loss is £500, over a period that has seen cars loose money like no other.

I'd been looking to change my car since October.

A dealer has been trying for the past 5 weeks to sell me an 07 CLK63 with 11k miles. Started out at £43k, then it went down to £39k and yesterday, they offered me £33k firm before it was sent to an auction.

Very enticing and all, but my 07 CLK350 with 8k miles was valued at £17,550 trade in ...... The damn car cost £45k in June last year. There's absolutely no point in part exchanging anything presently.

The other way to consider it is that I'll be topping up £15k for the swap. So I'll treat it as I've spent £60k on a CLK63 'since' last June. But how much will it be worth in a couple of years?

I've decided to forget about the whole thing. It just doesn't add up. I'll just thank my lucky stars knowing I have a steady job and can still bum around comfortably in my CLK.

I am just glad I got my car on a PCP - and that at the end of it I can hand over the keys and walk away! It certainly won't be worth anywhere near settlement figure at the current depreciation rate. Which come Feb/Mar will be a hell of lot worse.

Only gripe I have, is buying diesel based upon the current fuel prices difference of 15p /litre - doesn't make too much economical sense right now, but I am hopeful (praying) it will change...

...and I think that when these agreements come to a close during the next year they will knock values even more as leasing companies cannot generally take the decision to hang in there - they have to shift the cars and off to auction they go. And supply outstrips demand and prices fall further - arguably.

And if it doesn't just buy a petrol. ;)

I have given up with diesel, the unfounded fear against petrol keeps the diesel prices sky high, so unless you buy brand new there is no point, and if you buy brand new you are going to do 45% depreciation in year one anyway so even if you do 50k miles a year depreciation is the least of your worries.

The 63 I was looking at has been auctioned off. I wonder how much it fetched? ......... ??£30k??

It's a lovely combo. The interior is just fantastic, even better in flesh. It's Perlite Grey with Java interior.

Whatever they will offer for my 350, it will be a lot less than what it is worth to me.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with my 350, although a 63 will be a treat. But then, it's not the time for such extravagance, even though it's within reach.

a Perlite Grey CLS55/63 is even more fabulous, and just as rare, if not rarer
