Hi all my father-in-laws C180 has started having gear box problems . The car some times will lose drive ,almost like it has sliped out for gear , when the car is stopped and the shifter is moved into P then back into D it will drive ok again for a while . Also the car sometimes changes lazy , I have not been able to pull any codes yet because im on hoildays and have no access to STAR . I don't know when the car last had a fluid change , but the car has a full MB history , and has done 110000 miles . Has any one had these problems before ?
Cheers Steve

I would check the level first, you need the proper stick but you can check it with some curtain rod, just push it down the gearbox dipstick hole until it stops remove rod and measure how far up from the bottom it is.

Engine needs to be warm and running check with box in park.

Can be a pain to check level taking multiple goes and to make it worse each time you remove stick you are smearing more oil on the inside of the tube messing up the readings even more.

When i first got mine it dropped out of gear and was low on oil.

Not sure where in ireland you are but there are at least 2 members from there.

Proper stick on e bay about £20 from the usa

Thanks for the reply Lynall . I suspected that it could be that the trans oil was low . I have not had a chance to check the car over . Im gonna check the oil level tomorrow , then next week il take it to work and look for codes . Thanks once again
