280SE - mileage altered?

Yes i agree, this happens on all the older mercs, the digit in from always starts moving.... My W123 is on 97K and the one is showing its head..
The 107 is on 29K and the 3 is starting to show...

Not quite so, any 9 turns the next figure, the preceding 8 cant start moving the 9 until that is on 9 ans so on, the 9 and the next one lock and go round together and in this one the 9 is not ready to move until the preceding 8 is on nine.

By the look of the car thats a 200000 miles + Motor it is 22 years old !

Now a CAT D (recorded as a total loss by an ins. co.)on RAC site. Cavaet Emptor![/LIST]1999 FORD MONDEO LX GOLD (#110146403343)
.

As far as I'm aware only a motor trader is obliged to disclose if a car has been a write off.
The seller seems to be registered as a private seller despite the fact that he is selling several cars and car related items a months. Looks like a bit of a 'home trader' to me.
Perhaps he didn't do his research before buying the car himself

Hmm well we have owned the W123 from new so you are telling me i must have clocked it?
My SL had a brand new clock from Mercedes 29K ago (have the invoice) and that must have been clocked too?

I dont doubt your experience malcolm, but you must be missing something here as i have owned many many older mercs and can tell you that this does happen and its not necessarily a sign of clocking...
There are members that have posted the same experience in this and other forums too.

now if the digits further in start to go out of line then it would arouse suspicion, but the first number always starts to move slightly prematurely...

Television, wouldn't therefore, the 8 start to move the 9, so in turn start to move the 1 of 100,000?

Darren
Its not worth talking about and arguing, but the 8 will not move until the 7 is on 9, that will pick up the 8 that picks up the 9 and takes the 0 round to 1

I thought that milage could be checked on the DLVC website if you have the MOT and Vin number etc ?

Would it not flag as an anomolie to DVLC if the mileage on the recent MOT is lower than the previous milage entered for last MOT ?

that only works since MOT's went digital... if a car was clocked before a couple years ago, there is no way of really checking bar the traditional methods...

Surely Jay when you buy a car you sum it up quickly as to how far that car has been without looking at the speedo.

Exactly, So if the car was off the road for a period between MOTs and digitalisation, that would create even more suspicion of being clocked.

Dont forget this car is Category C write off.
Drivers side wing does not look a good match to rest of car.
Only one picture of passenger side. No picture of front of car.
As the man says - Buyer Beware !!

absolutely, the last thing i look at is the speedo when judging how hard life its had... how well the digits line up is probably the last thing on the checklist... you really want to be looking at things like wear on the interior, pedals, steering wheel, oil pressure, history etc etc...

"WHEN I BOUGHT IT THIS PICTURE IS BEFOR I REPAIRED IT SO YOU CAN SEE HOW SMALL IT WAS ,THE INSURANCE COMPANY PAID OUT AND WOULD NOT REPAIR IT BECAUSE OF ITS AGE IT IS REGISTERED ON HPI AS CAT C UN ECONOMIC REPAIR" - this is copied & pasted from the cars description, poor grammar and all

A car like that with NO history/paperwork?
One for the SE afficianado.
Does look very nice though.
Very nice,pure class.

I'm not familiar with this model but doesn't it look like it's had a major front end shunt on the RH side ? New paint, disturbed VIN plate and buckled metal ?

adam

The seller's in a bit of a panic, judging by his additions to the auction.

£3k for a 280 126 with zero history? Hardly.

I asked the seller the following questions. Let's see if he answers them and includes the question and answers in the eBay advert:

How long have you owned the car?

How many previous owners?

Where has the car been serviced and why are there no records of this?

ADDED IN EDIT:

This seller has some very dodgy feedback with adverse remarks from high bidders who have been disappointed to find that the cars they bought are Category C insurance write offs. The seller seems to specialise in them!
