I have been looking at some 2nd hand AMG rear boxes recently - such as the C36 AMG one that appeared on eBay a few days ago.

Apart from the obvious exterior condition, is there anything that I need to be careful about reguarding the inside of one? are they simply hollow or do they have some type of chamber inside?

Thanks

AFAIK all M-B rear boxes (including AMG ones) are quite heavily baffled ... nothing like a simple box.

'Heavily baffled' - is that somthing that can be damaged easliy?

Baffles can/will rust out.

Mind you that may not be important - depending how quiet you want it to be. I had a Mk3 Cavailer and the original rear box "lasted" 100K - I say "lasted" becuase when it eventually failed on the inlet pipe. When I took it off and there was nothing left inside apart from a pile of rust in the bottom. The interior baffles and wadding must have gone long before the exterior failed. But although the car must have been noisier - it wasn't noticably so, and the new one wasn't noticably quieter. Although driving with no rear box for a day was fun:D :D

Not sure about all AMG boxes, but that's what I'd heard too, so when mine arrived out came the angle grinder, and guess what?

Not a baffle in sight. Should have just poked a length of welding wire through and saved myself the effort but everyone was sure they were baffled.

I fitted the C36 AMG box to my C230K W202.

The large square pipes looks a bit beefier than the C43 one. I guess it depends on which look you like, but personally I liked the C36 look.

I was lucky that the box I got from a member of this forum was in good nick.

Did it make a difference in sound or performance or was it purely for aesthetics?

AMG rear box made no noticeable difference on my SL. That's why I had the centre muffler removed.

Thanks for your replies!

I was outbid on an item and now have the option to purchase it... mmm

Was it that C36 box that went for £54 odd pounds on ebay ?

No difference whatsoever in sound. I dont think there will be anything in performance either really. If you want performace, you have to rework the exhaust from the front end.

It looks good :D

The tailpipes didnt look too smart, but its worth the price if you needed a replacement box.

Dunno if you could deweld the chrome tailpipes and get them rechromed.

Whatever the case, this is a £500 box if you uy it from MB new.

I should be picking it up next weekend, upon collection anything I should do to 'test' it? eg, check if it rattles, look for holes etc etc.

Should the C36 AMG make my V6 sound any deeper?

Thanks

Nope......no sound difference whatsoever....if its sound you want, you need to go down the Remus route.

Re testing it, nothing you can do there apart from shake it and see if it rattles and check for holes.

Really?

In that case, wouldnt I be better just buying some tips and getting them welded onto my existing box?

Not sure I agree with that, I'm sure there's at least a couple of people on here who've fitted AMG rear silencers to W202s, some of them were markedly changed.

Eg, Graham C230K fitted a CLK/C43 AMG type one to his W202 and he reckoned it was quite a lot louder.

There is an AMG 'accesory box' for regular W202s that apparantly doesn't change the note very much, maybe you're thinking of that?

The bore of the pipework on the C36 box is huge compared to standard ;)

You could, but your existing box pipes curve down. Could be tricky.

It depends what you want. If the C36 box is in good condition and at a good price, get it and fit it....after all it would cost £500 to buy new.

The C36 rear pipes look good :)

However, if it is sound you are looking for, you have to either get a custom box built or go foa an aftermarket such as Remus.

I just sold my Remus on ebay, and I kind of regretted it as it was mint, and looked good.

However I am glad I firtted the C36 box as its silent.

When going on a motorway for some distance, the droning noise from these noisy boxes can be hard work :)...personal taste I guess :)

Hi Will,

I fitted a genuine C36 box, and on mine there is no difference whatsoever. Maybe different on C43 boxes.

However tyhe c36 and c43 rear boxes are identical in outer appearance apart from tail pipes....dunno what the difference is inside though.:)
