Last week my V Belt shredded as it got stuck to the belt tensioner roller. Not sure the exact cause but I needed a new belt and also a new roller. I have replaced the roller but can't get the new belt on.

I have managed to thread it to the correct position but if I loosen the alternator to fit the belt on all the pulleys I can get the alternator back in place once the belt is in place. Do I need a special tool of is there a certain bolt I need to undo to solve this problem?

You need to slacken the bolt on the front of the belt tensioner and unwind the adjuster nut enough to allow you to get the new belt on. Then use the adjuster nut to tension the belt to the mark on the tensioner, and retighten the front nut. You shouldn't need to touch the alternator.

A W124 workshop manual (Haynes or Brooklands) will cover your M103 engine.

Turned out the Bolt on the belt tensioner was seized and the entire radiator needed removing to get it all sorted, thankfully the AA came out and did the job for me. Took him a few hours and he was determined to complete the job even though he was only allocated a set time to complete the job.
