I am new to this, and new to my 1976 350SL. But, mine has a 3sp auto, were any fittted with a 4 sp auto? Or was the 4sp auto only on the 500SL. If so would the 4sp fit the 350? I just feel another gear would be better at top end and more efficient.

Welcome to the forum.

My 81 280SL has a four speed. However, it normally takes away in 2nd unless provoked, and top is still direct not overdrive so you may be on a hiding to nothing by changing even if you could.

I believe the 4 speed was introduced at the change-over from iron to alloy block V8 engines in 81?. This post , which deals with putting a 4 speed manual in one of these cars implies the bell housing bolts are different so the later 4 speed autobox won't fit an iron block car ? :dk: Installing a 4 speed into a V8 107 - PeachParts Mercedes ShopForum
