my 3rd brake lamp has gone, it is not the wire in the boot lid as the other lights are working, i wanted to know where the fuse is located for it, i tried the fuse box in the boot and the dashboard but no joy, is there a fuse box in the engine bay...

:fail

I think you may need to give a few more details in order to get a response.

Model?
Year?

It could be a number of things get codes read it may be a Sam issue even

sorry its a 2003 e270cdi and no codes are coming up using odb2,it is going into indie to be chechked for rough running next week but i do have a spare 3rd lamp which i am going to try but wanted to confirm the fuse first before changing

update, found the front fuse box and no fuses blown so changed the light cluster but still no joy, any ideas would be appreciated

Can't be much help I'm afraid as I only have a fuse chart for the C Class.
However, the brake light fuse on the C Class is number 62 in the under bonnet fusebox and is for all three brake lights.

Have you checked for live voltage at the light (obviously with the brakes applied and ignition on) and also check the earth wire. It's possible that there could be a break in either wire.
It's also possible that it's a fault with the rear Sam.
