500E ASR Issue

Hi All,

Looking at buying a 500E finally, found one which looks good in black (199) with full mushroom leather.

All the usual options, electric seats, sunblind, AC with new compressor and a recent service at MB. I spoke to MB and they said the car is mint, bar brake lines which are becoming corroded and a broken exhaust hanger. Transmission fluid changed.

Car is a German import and owner has had it since 1999.

It has an ASR issue. Light comes on after a few miles of driving and doesn't go off until ignition turns off. ASR doesn't work during this time. MB want £1800 for a fix.

Wiring harness never changed.

Any ideas? How much would a wiring harness refresh on a 500E cost?

Not being sold by them but they recently serviced it. Buying it privately.

So what's £1800 for ?? What needs replacing ? You know where the experts are on these cars, Bill. This part is a must and there's no cheaper option!

Cheers Bing. I love the cream interior on your old one. Did you fit that steering wheel or did it come with the car? It's awesome.

I currently drive a 330ci M BMW so the 500E is going to be an awesome piece of kit.

I may speak to Olly on here re sorting the ASR issue, probably best to take it down to him once I buy it

Originals are big £££(£) if you can find one.

The module is a rare failure (in fact I haven't heard of any), so I would get a second opinion. Usually owners mess with it to do burn outs by pulling the speed sensor above the strut mounts or pulling the relay, which btw also disables the ABS. If it's the module check if it's interchangeable with other models then find a used one.

Get the values read on star. It can be read out. I would imagine more likely the throttle actuator loom. These can be repaired

I consider 2012 is the year of the throttle body fault. Don't know what next year's "favourite" fault is yet
