Just wondered if any UK member has done an 82mm throttle body upgrade on their ''55k''.

Many thanks.

I have one fitted and Lopes80, BrabusSL and Acid have them fitted as well. Not sure about anyone else.

As much info as poss please.....you will not bore me with tiny detail....let the typing commence.....or if you wish I would be happy to give you a phone call. Ta.

Ricky has too....

I bet no one has bothered measuring the pressure drop across the throttle body. I would expect the intake trunking to be generating most of the pressure drop.

which means?

That changing the throttle body will do nothing unless the engine can breath more air than the throttle body can pass.

If the restriction is elsewhere, then it's a waste of time. No point using a larger garden hose if there is a kink in it. ;)

For sure, the system is only as good as its narrowest point.

The engine has to do something with that air as well - like add some extra fuel to it, burn it and generate more power

I am prepared for a dyno plot to prove me wrong but I will think changing the throttle body on its own will change very little

I would imagine that the larger TB would be looked at only in conjunction with other mods.

Bearing in mind that these engines are forced induction (supercharged), the tuning potential is quite large.

Add a few PSI to the boost (pulley swap?) and if the TB is restrictive (?) then I guess it makes sense :)

Did MB make/utilise different sized TBs throughout the 55K range - I know the power outputs varied over the years/models.

What does the SLR do for the extra power?

Mine was measured after fitting as we were identifying whether additional performance could be found from modifying the TB shaft, housing flow, supercharger inlet, waste valve. The flow numbers I was giving were that the 82mm TB could flow 965 cfm and after some modifications to the shaft and plenum we increased this to 985 cfm but with the standard airboxes fitted it dropped to 930 cfm. The standard 74mm TB and standard Y-pipe on the bench would only flow 850 cfm. We each component was looked at from TB Y pipe, airbox, python tubes and grill intakes and found it was at the python tubes/grill inlet where the flow seemed to be most restricted. With the airbox's and y-pipe managing 950 cfm so quite an improvement over the standard 74mm. This is all maximum air flow what was noticed was that pressure is actually lost in comparison to the standard TB until the supercharger starts to spin which with the pulley size I have actually creates and almost turbo like driving experience with a significant surge at 2k rpm.

some of the r230`s had bigger TB`s, and the SLR, same engine !

Ricky has too....

Rickys is the 80mm which is also called the 78mm as the port size narrows on exit SteveBez I think also had an 82mm

The headers are also important as the standard ones are very restrictive.

What do you want to know, some clues would help

No point in soley upgrading the TB as said, need headers as well, then you'l need this or that, the ongoing list is endless.
I personally have amongst numerous mods, an upgraded OEM TB stated as 80mm TB, which apparently is actually 78mm TB opening, so not quite the 82mm, as some of the other informed guys here have.
The mods to the 55K, you need to do your homework, its all been sorted and researched and done over in the US, and a few guys here now, Brabus K8, Lopes 80, Brabus SL, Sav Man, Steve Bez, to name a few, all big time mods, and all very powerful cars well exceeding standard OEM AMG power, and also a few others at different levels have carried these mods into the UK.

My own car is quite modded now, but I would say I did know bugger all about my car initially, but with the help, advise of some of the named above, and a few others, Black C55, Alps, amongst others, all very switched on regards these cars, and some homework, I am now aware of whats what to an entry level of these engines, they are awesome.
My big negative if you are wanting to move into this field of modding a 55K car, is bring deep pockets, it can cost loads. is it worth it, in my eyes yes, whilst my car is now bearing on 8 yeares old, I have had the most fun from my car than any other I owned previously, love the car, still smile when I get to drive it, and had it 7 years now (lomgest previously owned car was 2 years), and have met some great people, from this forum at meets and to the events a few of us have frequented. This is a great forum, and I am sure if you need to know something, someone here will give you an answer or an honest opinion. Best of luck wth your modding

By the way if anyone is looking for one I have a spare 82mm TB and housing I just need to get an additional adaptor plate made.
