560 Engine Issues?

I am building a drag car and have decided to use the 560 engine.

I'll be using twin turbos and expect a lot of horsepower, i've not been able to find any evidence of this being done before so was wondering about a few aspects of it.

Is it closed deck block?
Any design issues with it, headgaskets I think someone has mentioned before?
Does anyone know if the pistons are forged or cast?
I know people have used the crank in M119 engines so hope it is strong.

I chose it due to the block being crossbolted and it's reliability, which to me says it was over engineered.

Any technical spec sheets on the engine would be very gratefully recieved.

It's going in a Spaceframed MK1 Escort, 2 speed powerglide gearbox and 9" Ford back axle, I was initially going to use the closed deck 500E engine but the cylinder coating and scarce nature of this engine have put me off.

Didn't Mercedes do almost exactly this with the 5 litre engines that went into the Sauber Mercedes racers some years ago ....

Don't know what model the racers were but they were the ones that had fluro orange and yellow wing mirrors to tell them apart .....

I saw a picture of one being bench tested with the manifolds glowing cherry red .....

EDIT :- The C9 or C8 which was 720 and 700 hp respectively, the C8 had twin turbos..... and is the right era for the 560 engine ...

Good luck !!

No Sauber used the AMG engines with the AMG Quad Cam heads which resulted in them knocking out 700+ BHP.

The problem with the M117 engine is that it does not actually breathe that well which is why Sauber used the Quad Cam Heads.

The bottom ends on the M117 are bomb-proof as the engine block was originally designed for diesel use.

If it helps the Quad Cam engines as used in the AMG Hammers used the standard pistons, albeit they were machined down. Head gaskets on the Quad Cams are also standard items as the heads were designed to fit a standard block, hence the heads had to marry up with the coolant passages, head studs etc.

It says in the literature though that they are 2 valve heads?

How does the timing case etc marry up to the block and heads? Inlets etc are no worry as i'll be making my own.

Standard 560 engine have 2 valve heads, the AMG Quad Cam heads have 4 valves per cylinder.

Re timing covers, the 4 valve heads marry up with the bottom covers and there is a gasket between the two.

That's excellent.

Roll on summer#!

Thanks for the help.

Dave!
