Hi all just thought i would post what i did to my wheels they cost about £7 each to do.
The rims were quite damaged due to kurbing nicks in the center of the wheel the rim was cleaned up by hand starting with 60 grit paper and finishing off with 120 then 400 grit any really deep dinks which there there were a few where filled with standard body filler and flatted same as you would for a body panel.
The rims were primed and wet flatted with 600 grit wet and dry.
The next coat was a silver metalic paint this was a swine to apply as it looked really patchy dark patches etc ,however if the paint is sprayed from about 2 foot away and then let to flash off about 10 minutes and without touching it at all lacquer over from the same distance the finish is consistent.
The
lacquer was left to dry for a few hours and then gently polished with a metalic type t cut polish.
I have also made a mask for doing the rest of the wheels see photos.
All materials were bought from a high street shop for next to nothing see photos as i don't really want to advertise
Paul

Never seen someone do it quite like that before! Did you make that piece of wood/rubber yourself? How come you did not take the tyres off the rim and just spray them all?

The rest of wheels are on the car in the paint shop thats why ive only done this one so far,i agree it is much better to remove the tyres but that will cost about £10 a corner by the time the tyre is refitted and balanced plus ive got to get down to the tyre fitter.
The mask was made from 6mm ply wood and the two pieces of electrical flex nailed to the wood one at a time with a stapler and 15mm nails.

Very good. i liked the wood idea.

i'm going to have a stab at this on the spare wheels i have ready for my 107 over this winter.

I am impressed - the result looks great. Will the body filler 'hold' to the wheels over time?

Body filler should do, its not been used in large quantities and as long as the area to be filled has been properly prepped, I cant see a problem...

Nice job. BTW if you want the original silver colour then Wurth alloy wheel silver is a spot on match.

The mobile refurb companies do it with the tyre on. They deflate the tyre and break the the top bead but not the bottom so the tyre doesnt move on the rim and it wont need rebalancing.

How do you think the bodyfiller will hold up against fitting on new tyres?

when they bang the tyre onto the rim etc...?

There is only a smigeon of filler in the rim i will just have to ask the tyre fitter to be carefull it shouldnt be a problem nowadays as they are used to alloy wheels.
If they do get scratched etc i can always touch up later as i have all the materials here something i wouldn't have if i had them done profesionally.
The mask was made after i had done this wheel as this one will need a new tyre due to a bulge in the side wall. The others are all good.

I get my powder coaters to do mine now.

He chemically dips, shot blasts, repairs and fills, then oven powder coats and finally laquers for £20 per rim.

I have previously refurbed my own and it cost me more getting the bits, let alone the time it takes.

^Where abouts is that? any contact details?

Heard of a few cheap ones in birmingham and bradford

I recently did mine, also with the tyres on the rim. I simply masked the tyres up.

I got good results too.

Google 'Wurth alloy silver'. Also a good online supplier for all the bits you would need to refurb alloys is Wheel Paints
