Where was the water leaking from?

I'd have it steam cleaned underneath and then Waxoyled. Rust is the enemy of these cars as they get older. Those natty chrome wheelarch embellishers will be (or are) hiding rust and I'd take them off to see what's underneath

So long as you follow the Mercedes servicing schedule to the letter nothing much will go wrong. You'll need new front anti-roll bar bushes at some point and they tend to break front springs and wear out front balljoints, but these things tend to happen at high mileages (200k-odd) and are not expensive to fix. Make sure the gearbox oil & filter have been changed recently

Don't fit cheap tyres (I recommend Continental Premium Contacts) or cheap parts (buy them from the dealer) and you'll be OK

Replace the timing chain between 160 and 180K miles.

If it's built post August 1st 1995 then expect there to be some rust coming through as that's when the factory changed to waterbased paints for all models.

there was a small hole in the radiator, which is sorted now.

ive already changed the filter in the box, and done a service on the engine.
im more familiar with the foibles of w123s and 126s so i thought id ask for some advice.
as regards the arch trims, i hate them and they are coming off, but for the price i wasnt going to argue.
116k miles, 3 owners, full MB stamped service book (the last being at 115k), one minor mark on the body, mint interior, 4 new tyres and the air con has just been checked out and given a clean bill of health.

cheers for the pointers fellas.
:)
