Hi.

Having problems with my auto box on a facelift 97 S320.

Delay changing up (feels like the gear is slipping into 'neutral' before changing - when of course the revs result in a 'thud' into gear).

Happens mostly between 1st and 2nd but not exclusively and has worsened of late.

My MB service centre (not main dealer) says "replace the gearbox for circa £1800".

Any ideas/observations?

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

Firstly you should check the atf level as this is vital. Low atf can cause strange transmission behaviour.

If the level is ok and the main dealer says its knackered you best bet is to take it to an auto box specialist for them to have a look.

How mant miles has it done?

There is an automatic gearbox place near me.
I have used them in the past and everyone I know who has had problems has gone there.
I'll find the details and post them here.

BTW, welcome to the forums both of you.

Just under 60k.

In for a service next week - will make sure the ATF gets a look (although it is the same place that had the car in to look at the gearbox previously).

I'm having a similar problem on my W210. Difficulty in moving into second (a bit jerky) and when slowing to a crawl seems to drop back into first gear. I had the ATF level checked and fitted a new MAS which seems to have made a vast improvement to performance but still exibiting the afforementioned problems. MB specialist said these gearboxes are normally quite good and at very worst should cost a max of £800 ish.

I've had some problems with mine too, but I've got twice the miles!

See http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=31947

As well as the ATF thats already been suggested, check the MAF sensor is OK
(can cause weird gear changes if its buggered) and reset the throttle with
the key/accelerator pedal down trick.

Latest diagnosis on mine is the gearbox needs a new valve body at a cost
of about 1100 quid.

Let us know how it goes!
