I'm sure this has an easy answer but it's one of those things that annoys me intensely.

How do you switch off the autolock feature? IE when you drive off after a few seconds the doors all lock.

If your car has the options / settings menu accesible via the steering wheel buttons then see if you can find the option there and disable it. I can on my W203 but not sure if the W202 model has this. If not then presumably a coding option via STAR?

I haven't got steering wheel buttons so that's not an option.

If it is a safety feature it's an extremely tedious one.

I don't think it's a DIY job, possibly a STAR option to disable it?

You do have a button within easy reach right in front of you on the dash to lock/unlock all doors, and a seperate button to remotely open the boot from within the cabin :)

Yes I know about the button and the door handles thing.

School run. School 1. Child arrives. Child tries to get in. Push button. School 2. Child arrives. Child tries to get in. Push button. School 4. Child arrives. Child tries to get in. Push button. Extremely tedious.

And it's my car! I want to decide what it does and doesn't do - not some teutonic computer.

Really? I've been in many a late model w202 and never seen it :(

It's the switch to the right of the 'big red one' :D. You were looking for a new mod, weren't you? To bring yours up to the standard of a lowly Classic Selection....;)

I think the autock is a good safety feature, which should be more important than a little tedium, particularly when children are involved. I believe the autolock activates at 5mph. Fairly sure it will only allow unlocking from inside if the speed drops below that (need to check manual).

Don't the W203/204s and other recent models have it?

All W202s regardless of age have that switch, ive never come across one that locks itself after 10 secs of so of driving... like my Dads W211 does...

My mates late 99/00 one doesnt have it.

Unless im getting the wrong end of the stick?

It's not the switch Karl, after you drive away from wherever you are parked, the doors will automatically lock, you will hear almost an audible click as the door locks slide into the doors.

And reaching across to unlock the doors on the school run, come on is it really something to tear your hair out about? There are more important things to be worrying about.

AHA! RTFM!

You can switch it on and off.

Autolock on.
Key to position 2.
Press and hold Lock for 6 seconds.

The full details are on pp8-9 of the 'Exterior' manual. Everyone happy now? :)
