Hi All,

Problem with my car after 5years.. Locked into 2nd gear. Anyone with same problem?

Hi Juli. Sorry your first post has to be a cry for help.

The car is in "limp-home" mode. One of the sensors somewhere has decided that something is wrong, and has made the car movable, but essentially undrivable - to 'get you home'.

Turning it off and back on way resolve it in the short term, but you need to get it to a dealer/independant with the proper diagnostic gear, as you don't want it happening in the wrong place. There loads of things that *can* go wrong, such as a MAS sensor, but it is not worth speculating when you can get it diagnosed in a few minutes on the computer.

U need to get car down to Staeler/Specialist to plug it into Star Diagnostics Computer and the fault codes will then indicate where the problem lies.

Hopefully, it shall just be a sensor or something but as nick has pointed out it it could be a number of factors. Stealer will charge an hours labour for the inital diagnosis and £80 (plus VAT) per hour for labour so take it down to a MB Specialist (will be cheaper). Tell us where your located and we shall be able to recommend a MB Specialist/Independant close to you...

Worse scenario would be a new gearbox (and I have heard of 4 different examples of the gear boxes going on the old shape A Class on other forums that I have browsed...) with car being stuck in "limp mode".
