Morning all,
We're looking to buy the sat nav upgrade for Mrs Edd1968's daughter for Christmas.
She drives a 2013 A180 cdi without the sat nav on the central display installed.
She's said that the MB upgrade is something like 500 quids which we don't want to spend. Is there a cheaper alternative?

I am assuming you are referring to the Becker Map Pilot navigation unit that fits in the glove compartment?

If so they can be bought for about 180 with the latest maps from various Ebay sellers.

If so, then new ones can be bought off Amazon:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007T7QC7W/?tag=amazon0e9db-21

And there are plenty of second-hand units on eBay.

If opting for a second-hand unit, then make sure the price is right, because if they haven't got the latest maps installed, then you'll need to upgrade the maps yourself and the upgrade cost 89.00 Euro (from Becker's website).

EDIT - just saw fununcle's response, spot on.

Is this what you mean? Is it plug and play thingy?

Blimey! She has a smartphone with a perfectly good sat nav. I'll get her a phone holder undead!! ;)

Absolutely no idea! :)

Way too new for my liking :D
Have a look inside the glove compartment, at the top right-hand side, see if you have a dock that looks like this:

As above if the vehicle has the Becker map pilot system there will be a interface port in the top of the glove box, it's then plug & play.

Ebay is your source of the module, get the latest version available. There's currently a MB dealer selling new @ £259 + loads of SH at various prices, be careful though the module is very easy to corrupt when upgrading firmware & maps:)

Yes, smartphone-based satnav app will have better navigation software and also better live traffic data. And Waze and Google Maps are actually free.

The advantages of built-in navigation is that it integrates with the car's display and instrument cluster, and it does not depend on phone chargers and batteries etc. It also prevents the clatter of a mobile phone on the windscreen.

Great book, not much of a Christmas gift though :)

It's a Garmin, that stand is an excellent gadget - easily removable (as in just take it off) and no residue, etc.

I still have one complete stand (for hire cars etc), and the other I took apart and used the mounting part to fix permanently in my A200, the flexi base is a spare now.
These are over eight years old, and still a perfect grip.

You can just about see the mount on the right here in the A200 (over the driver's air vent):

Probably a better pic:

The new head unit does have a great satnav app, but I still prefer my old standalone Garmin. Here's me bench testing the newly bought head unit, back in July 2017:

I feel the old Garmin is much better positioned, for a quick glance, when I need to see the lane or exit number in advance - here it is displaying the gauges from its own OBD reader (permanently hard-wired and hidden inside the dash):
