Hi all,

I've just seen an 2000 A190 for sale with a few problems. The owner has said that the car has a broken cam chain, which happened when he started the car last week. The car was not moving at the time.

It's currently at a Merc garage and he has been told that it's a huge job to repair and that there may be untold damage to the engine, once they take the thing apart. They have suggested a new engine to be fitted at £1700.00 plus labour.

My question is whether it's worth offering something for the car and getting it repaired at an independant. Would it be worth it or might it be absolutely shot?

I don't want an A class, but it's only done 70000 and has a full service history, so I'd sell it on once repaired.

What do you reckon?

Unless you can do the work yourself and get an engine cheap then it's probably a non starter.
You would need the car to be very cheap to start with.

I had a customer recently phone me with that problem.

Its new engine really and a bloody long winded job.
