A convertible would be nice!

GFP sorry I think you have to wake up and smell the coffee...

Yes your entitled to your opinion please explain why in your words an MX5 or S2000 is as you put it GAY ?

Seems a little childish response to be honest.

I like the pic of the SLR he put up. Really Japanese that :wallbash:

The MX5 is one of the finest sports cars ever made, I've never driven one and its probably one of the few japanese cars I'd buy (old Lexus IS200 being another, S2000 being another). Perhaps he needs to "come out" and smell the Fresh air :D

I imported my MX5 direct from Japan. Best little summer car Ive ever had - the most fun you can have. You can literally bolt on mods such as turbos, it hits a power band at about 7000 revs and is SO easy to maintain.

I think I can honestly say everyone who got in mine wanted a one.

Importing from Japan was a great idea, they don't have road salt and their MOT called the Shaken is very very expensive, covers a mass of items and I think at a certain age the MOT cost goes up to 4 figures. - Thus they look after their cars

I cant wait to get another one, once I can clear the childrens toys out of the garage.

Hugh..

I went to dublin for mine, still saved a fortune. It also had a lot of expensive tuning kit. Borbet alloys, Blistein suspension, front and rear strut braces, chrome roll cage etc etc..

I always wanted a supercharger, rather than a 'greedy' turbo, would give around 185bhp at low boost.

GFP has probably never been in one...

I always remember having a dual with a TT in mine and took a bend that even I thought was going to push the little 5.... It went round like a scalextric car and the gap just opened up...

Great car, its best people don't understand. More for us :)

Yeh they bring them into ireland first to avoid something ( cant remember whether its vat or something) A&F did them near Dublin?

Aas you say, you really do have to have a go in one to realise what theyre capable of.
I had mine naturally aspirated, timing advanced from 10 to 14 degrees and it was fine fast enough for me.

As I say, once I have garage space back, Ill buy another.

I wouldn't doubt that the MX5 is a great car, but it is not my cup of tea and if I were to go down the convertible route it would have to be a big petrol hence my interest in the XK/R. The CLK 500 cab would also 'float my boat' too, but isn't the out and out bruiser that the XKR is.

My wife has a penchant for convertibles.

My observations are.

1. right time/right place just about any convertible is wonderful

2. they're heavier, they rattle more, they squeak more.

3. two seats is fine for a couple but sucks for family use

If you can live with the Jag or an SL then you only live once (unless you're 007) so go for it.

But if you want to be a bit more sensible think about the CLK cabriolet. And I haven't driven one but I suspect that in reality if it's to be enjoyed as a convertible then the 500 isn't necessarily a huge advantage over the other engine options.

OK, so quickly moving away from the MX5, here's possibly the cheapest SL500 in the country at £4795. Cheap enough to buy without selling the CLK?

That looks like a decent price for a car with good history. However, buying a fourth car would frankly be stupid and very expensive! I will continue to drool over the XKR and maybe make a move early next year when I arrive at decision time over the Mini and the GL320 which will both be at the end of their respective PCP contracts.

You must drive your wife mad, I'm bad enough always looking at stuff.

My ML has lasted for 2 years which for me is amazing as I was swapping at a reat of one a year...

:) :)

Driving along the North Devon coast from Lynton to Ilfracombe at the weekend, Mrs D and I had the brainwave that we should get a cheapy MX5.

The one stumbling block is when we'd ever use it without Baby D and Jnr D. May give us a reason for some adults-only time, and no, before anyone suggests it, I don't mean throwing the car keys into a pot!! :D

Mrs D still blames me for her selling her MX5 years ago, so it might be a go-er.

id love a jag convertible but id kill the first person who shouted "couldn't afford an aston martin then"

How about an sl60 AMG that is on gumtree for half the price of that Jag?

Oh yes, my wife is driven (literally) to dispair by my automotive antics! Trying to get Mrs G fully engaged in choosing a car is like extracting overpaid expenses from wayward MPs. But as I originally said, it is a spot of window shopping at the moment - just preparing for the 'big change' next year when at least 2 of the 3 current cars will be changed.

I would be quite chuffed if someone compared a Jag XKR (which I owned) to an Aston, particuarly as I would have parted with a third of the cash and only lost half the qudos!

Lets have a link then!

my brother has a blue jag with i think the cream interior its the new shape and he told my wife he is thinking of a change last week dont know how much he want for it, but if you would like his number send me a private message and i'll give it to you cheers jon.
