:thumb: After wallowing around like a beached whale for the last two winters - I decided enough was enough - especially as I am a Department Manager and have a 26 mile daily commute - so a set of winter tyres it was.
I can tell you now that ATS and Kwik-Fit were extremely limited in choice - mostly pushing their own brands - I also discovered they were extremely poorly clued up on the subject,as well.I was also quoted £535.00 for a set of 4 tyres by ATS and told by another that there was a months waiting list/time!!!!!!!
Anyway, having done some research,I settled on some Nokian WRG2's - I did some swotting up on the internet and found a company called Tyres Online at discount prices by PNEUS ONLINE: order new tyres online, car tyres, all brands available - :) they not only came in at the most competitive price of £317.00 all inclusive - including vat and delivery, they promised a 3 - 5 day delivery from France - and guess what - they were bang on,3 days later they arrived and they even provided tracking info - the only bit that I could grumble about was the UK side of the delivery process - surprise, surprise !!!! - they arrived approx. 5 hours later than the UK courier advised.I will certainly use them again - you can even have the tyres delivered to a local garage near you.Hope this helps other forum members.

I was looking at PNEUS site today. They seem to have a good range and are priced well.

Could not recommend them enough - they only sell if the tyres are in stock - so no messing about once the order is paid - your tyres are on their way !

I can also thoroughly recommend

www.mytyres.co.uk and www.camskill.co.uk

for great value winter tyres and good service. Camskill apologised that they could not deliver the next day - they came in 3 days; mytyres delivered in 5 or 6 days - from Germany.

Very useful site.:) Be interested to hear how you get on with the Nokians. You may find them a little "rumbly" on dry roads but you soon acclimatise.:thumb: My guess is you will be amazed at the difference in weather like this. Your main problem will be avoiding all those cars with summer tyres on.

I have Michelin Alpins on the w124 and Vredestein Snowtrac 3s on mrs S car; no noticeable difference in noise at all. Fuel consumption is up a bit but that may be the cold weather; they are both diesels. Performance in the ice and snow is nothing short of astonishing - and you are absolutely right my biggest problem on Tuesday was figuring out which car (or double decker bus in one case) was going to slide towards me next.

Camskill are out of almost all winter & snow tyres and Toyos are out of stock "Till October 2010"

Good luck buying tyres right now!

Nick Froome

You will certainly be able to buy them from European suppliers, as their use is mandatory in some countries in the winter months.

I have Nokian Z's fitted to my 17" rims on my Toyota, ok, not winter tyres, but bloody good all the same! (Have used them for my cars for nearly 10 years now, never a problem). Got them from SET Tyres fitted for £55 a piece!

Ciao.

Even better when the tyres call you when going flat....

Is there a still a benefit just using rear winter tyres

An excellent choice. You will be very pleased with your new tyres.

A before and after report will make interesting reading.

I have some WRG2s in a runflat version fitted to my Clubman. They managed to put to shame a Suzuki SJ jeep last night who struggled to get up a snow and ice covered hill (10%) .

The only limitation you will have will be how prepared you are to ram snow drifts!

Is there a still a benefit just using rear winter tyres

Will give you more traction and reduce the chances of the back end going. A number of people claim do this without apparent harm but it is not something I would go for.

The front tyres do all the steering and provide most of the braking effort so a full set has to be best: people do not tend to come to grief through inabilty to get moving, more the inabilty to stop or steer!

Is there a still a benefit just using rear winter tyres

IMHO yes....I am using winter tyres on rear and have had no problems...I take care driving in the snow and make sure I have enough time to slow down.....a lot or problems in snow are due to traction and the wheels spinning causing the car to go sideways........I have driven many miles in much worse snow than this with summer tyres and chains on the driven wheels with no problems....so long as you don't expect to go charging, you should be fine.

PS sure fitting winters to all 4 corners would be best but not strictly necessary.

Some more thoughts on Nokian Winter Tyres.

:thumb: When I first did the research on Winter Tyres,I used both consumer reviews (Which can be subjective) - but also used the German ADAC Motoring Organisation Test, for winter tyres.Lets face it,they are thorough and objective, comparing grip in snow, ice, wet, dry, tyre wear etc.Link to this was provided by a member of this site,Satch,on 05/10/2009www.1.adac.de/Tests/Reinfentests/Winterreiifen/
Basically, the Nokian was placed about 2nd/3rd - with Continental been about the best - all were similar on grip in ice & snow - but the conti's and Michelin's offerings had about 3 times the wear rate of the Nokians.I would only recommend fitting a set of 4,rather than two to the drive wheels,as the holding, braking and steering is improved by 50% - data to prove this is on a Michelin site.My first impressions are extremely good and highly recommended - but the Nokian WRG2 is bettered by a true snow tyre of the same manufacturer the Hakkapelitta R - studded and non-studded - but my suspicion is that they will not wear as well as the WRG2 - and I wanted a balance of properties from the tyre - I think if I was in Scotland - I would invest in the Hakkapelitta's.
Lest face it - as long as we remain in denial in this country, people will never buy winter tyres - as global warming increases,as well as wet summers,I believe we will have more freakish winters - I have heard this 'one in 50 year winter' rubbish applied to the last two torrential summers we have had. Also,if you have a bump,it will cost you a lot more than a set of tyres and the salt degradation on your all season tyres is someting to think about !!!! - over all, very pleased with the results.:thumb:

Nankang SV2 winter tyres on a budget

Hello everyone, Ive recently just put a set of 4 Nankang SV2 Winter tyres on my w203 C320. Ive got the 17 inch Amg wheels, they normally have 245/40 on the rear but i changed them to the same as the front which is 225/45. This is well within the limitations of width (225 can go up to a 9 inch width wheel - my AMG's rears are 8.5) and with a 45 profile gives me the same rolling radius.
The results are amazing! I cant believe how good they are! I have a 26 mile commute each way to work, most of which is on country roads and after a few bad/slow/scary trips in fairly mild snow n ice, i decided I had to do something about it. (orginally i had just planned to take the wifes car but unfortunately she has a Mazda RX8 which was even worse than the Merc!) So I got 4 winter Nankang SV2 tyres from mytyres.co.uk for £336 fitted, I have since been in Heavy Snow, slush, and bad ice and the car hasn't spun up, skidded, fish tailed or got stuck, it just feels solid - a million miles away from how it felt before changing.
I have never put a cheaper brand of tyre on any of my cars before and I was a little sceptical, but for the 3 - 4 months a year of use they will get I thought it was worth a go and they really do work well!
