A Winter Tyre Recommendation....Pneus-Online

Just ordered Falken Eurowinter HS-439 for my CLK 500 from Mytyres....hope that they will do as well as kit17's Nankangs (kept original tyre size, that why I went for the Falkens.....very few to choose in 255/35 R18 size)...this is my wifes car and, like Kit17 she has a cross country drive to work along roads that are barely being gritted at the moment...running 225/45/17 Vredestine Quatrac 3 on my C270....great in snow!

Thanks to the original poster, I ordered 4 Nokian tyres on Friday from Pneus and got them today, I am amazed at the difference :thumb:

You are most welcome - lets get them cars off the drives and on the road !

 Only glad I could help - my experience so far is that, they have a bit more of a rumble - but that is to be expected and fuel consumption went up very slightly, but I certainly would buy the same again, just be able to get about and drive with confidence - I am no longer marooned.

I think if I was in Scotland - I would invest in the Hakkapelitta's.
Lest face it - as long as we remain in denial in this country, people will never buy winter tyres - as global warming increases,as well as wet summers,I believe we will have more freakish winters - I have heard this 'one in 50 year winter' rubbish applied to the last two torrential summers we have had. Also,if you have a bump,it will cost you a lot more than a set of tyres and the salt degradation on your all season tyres is someting to think about !!!! - over all, very pleased with the results.:thumb:

That first bit there is a tad stereotypical of scotlands weather hehe. 2bh england and wales has had it so much worse than up here. The roads are near-on perfectly clear apart from a few patches of ice in the quiet areas and we only had a few blizzards. There was a couple of days where the roads were not cleared but apart from that it was good enough to get around. None of the buses around my region were put off and as far as i know only the trains were delayed the worst lol. We actually had a few days of sun but it didnt help increase the temperature lol. We havent had any snow in the past week and a bit i dont think.

We are fitting loads of Nokians at present no problem at all getting them, Best customers at present MB & BMW owners !

Another vote for Pneus-Online

Ordered 4 Nokian WR G2s from Pneus-Online on Wednesday, arrived Saturday. Great service.
Got them fitted to new steel wheels, but still waiting for the bolts. Now the snow has all gone .

I don't think it is wise to attribute what you view to be a "freakish" winter to "global warming".....I am not sure that there is any evidence to support this...Cold winters like this were the norm 30-40 years ago...I used to go ice climbing regularly in the Lake District and Snowdonia in late 1970's early 1980's so winters must have been "freakishly" cold then...

PS agree with everything else you say!!

So, guys - Question:-

As it seems that UK Tyre Fitters aren't really interested or clued up (I'll back that up from my enquiries so far!!) about proper Winter Tyres, if I order from Pneus or MyTyres, do I just get exactly the same sizes as currently fitted?

I consulted the Manual (wish I hadn't) and it's a little confusing, but seems to suggest the it depends what OE rim size you've got and it gives different widths for Winter Tyres than those of Summer ones.....

CLK270CDi 2004, if there's a specific answer.

Cheers,

Scott

I have a 2004 C270 with 17" wheels and optional sport package....I looked at 245 rear winter tyres and decided that it would be better to fit 225 tyres as they were easier to get hold of....I found a couple of matching 7.5J x 17 rims on ebay over the summer and fitted the 225 winter tyres to these and put them on the rear...will change back to the standard 245 wheels for summer.
It is possible to get 245/40/17 winter tyres from mytyres but they are relatively expensive...I ended up paying around £60 for rims and £90 for tyres fitted.
My wife has a CLK500 with 265/18 rear tyres....I have elected to replace these with identically sized winter tyres....
I guess its really your choice.....

My manual says that for my C-Class, for winter tyres I should use 225/40 R 17 on the rear, and 205/50 R 17 on the front.

This is 20mm narrower in both cases compared to the standard tyre, with a corresponding increase of 5% on the aspect ratio to keep rolling radius broadly the same.

The above sizes were noted as being C32 AMG specific, however, given that my car has the usual 225 front and 245 rear setip as found on most cars with staggered 17-inch wheels, I would imagine that the above winter sizes are transferrable to other models with a similar set up.

That's similar to the CLK manual, so are the narrower tyres ok on the same rim? On another table on the next page, it gives exactly the same info but lists a different rim size this time:confused:

Confused......? You will be!

Yep, I wouldn't want to go any narrower than a 225 tyre on an 8.5j wheel though.

At the moment we're snow free here, not sure if it's fallen elsewhere as forecast?

I wonder whether it's worth getting a 2nd set of alloys c/w tyres and specify to the wheel supplier that I want Nokian tyres or whatever. They're offering a set of Alloys and 'branded' tyres for £430, might be worth an enquiry?

To keep it cheaper, would I go 225 rear, 205 front?

Difficulty with the Winter tyres, is that above 195, maybe 205 at a push, they get silly expensive.
