Hi

In my mom's A170 CDI I found a problem with an Automatic Transmission.

When accelerating - everything is fine - smooth and clear, but when braking or slowing down, I can really feel downshifting:mad:. The transmission doesn't change the gear clearly and smoothly. I called one guy and he said that it can be a transmission bushing under it or I need to add the oil....so I went to the shop they checked and everything was fine with the oil level:bannana:

Also, I found that when i put on R and release brake, sometimes there is a little jerk.....and it is sometimes hard to release the knob from the P position....

and I don't have a F fault on the dashboard.

do you have any ideas of what is wrong?

thanks

One thing than can lead to jerky downchanges in some cars is keeping the autobox in the W position, or C position. If you try the car in S for a few days you might feel a difference, the autobox is quite sensitive to the way that you drive it and sometimes this can result in poorer gearchanges due to the design of the 'box.
As regards there being a jerk when you engage reverse and release the handbrake, are you sure this isn't because the rear brakes are getting worn, certainly on cars with drum brakes at the rear this can happen.
My other suggestion would be to get the car put on star and see if it can be reset, depending on how the car has been driven that might affect the gearbox. Good luck with getting your problem rectified.

Im afraid the A class fully auto boxes are extremely weak.. however check the simple things first.. oil level.. then get it plugged into a star to see what its doing.

Thanks for the answers,

1. This is fully automatic transmission
2. The oil level is fine - i Checked at the shop
3. I didn't check the rear drums, but is it really possible to have that jerk from the brakes?
4. I already checked the Albert Rowe webpage - he has a manual A class and there is nothing about the atuomatic problems - just the oil change.

So I got the answer = CONVERTER was damaged. One guy who is excellent in reparing auto trans, got mine car and after a few days I took it from the garage - everything smooth and nice....
