A170 GearBox

Hi there i've been told that my A class needs a new gearbox valvebody as it faults changing between 3rd and 4th, i was told that it will cost about £800 plus vat, but i was wondering are these units repairable? as in remove the offending valve and clean, then refit or are they a sealed unit? as not ever seeing one i wouldn't know? Any ideas greeted with thanks.

auto i assume?

if so then refurbing the box costs £1K upwards and finding second hand is very difficult...

thanks for the reply, yes it is an auto, does the refurb box need coding? and if so who would do this?
